70s fashion trend 2019

One thing we’ve definitely noticed this year is that designers are making a major return of all things ’70s and we couldn’t be happier about it. See all the retro trends that are back into style and what pieces we can’t get enough of.

70s fashion trend 2019

Bell Bottoms
You definitely can’t think of the ’70s without thinking of bell bottoms, and now they’re hotter than ever before. We recommend purchasing a pair of bell bottoms at a lower price point if you’re not obsessed with this trend, that way you won’t feel guilty about your purchase if you don’t get a lot of wear out of it.

70s fashion trend 2019

Bell Sleeves
And, along with bell-style bottoms came tops with bell sleeves. What we love about this trend is it can easily be worn dressed down for a more casual look with jeans or dressed up with a skirt and heels for a night out.

70s fashion trend 2019

Jumpsuits were all the rage during this decade, and now, they’ve solidified their place as a wardrobe staple. Whether you prefer skin tight or loose fitting, this is a 70s inspired trend that every woman should give a try.

Peasant Dresses
The peasant dress was a major part of hippie fashion way back in the day, and now, it’s back. This year look, for all the embroidery, tassels, and tie-dye your wild heart desires.

Chunky Boots
DrMartens has gone back in time to honour its roots with their new Sex Pistols collaboration collection and have brought the ’70s back in the coolest way. Inspired by the iconic album artwork of Jamie Reid, the DrMartens x Sex Pistols collection features styles emblazoned with lyrics from the ’70s hit, Pretty Vacant.

Trend alert: neon is back in style and it’s hotter than ever. Highlighter hues might have taken the backseat to minimalist shades in recent years, but this season, things are going high-voltage. This year, step out of your neutral comfort zone and into some neon pieces, whether it’s a top, a killer pair of shoes or a playful accessory. Read on to see the neon pieces you need in your wardrobe ASAP.

The Sweater
Okay, we seriously can’t get enough of this colour. If a chunky, bold knit seems a bit too intimidating, pair it down with neutral accessories and shoes.

The Turtleneck
Layer a neon turtleneck under a neutral-hued dress for a look that will feel on trend, without making you feel too bright.

The Bottoms
Whether you’re in the mood for pants or a long skirt, a pair of neon bottoms with a simple black or white top will always look good.

The Accessory
Finally, if you’re not feeling bold enough to rock a neon fashion piece, you may want to try the trend as an accessory instead. This way you a can still incorporate into your look, without attracting too much attention to yourself.

Fashion Jobs – The Boot Trend we Can’t Get Enough of

Recently, if you’ve seen some of your favourite ‘It girls’ rocking footwear that makes them look like they belong on Little House on the Prairie, don’t be alarmed – it’s all intentional. Designers have taken a turn due West and one of the season’s hottest trends is western-approved boots. In a shift away from classic black ankle boots, fashion-forward cowboy boots are an instant way to vamp up your look and one of the trends we currently can’t get enough of. Check out some of our favourite styles below.

Ankle Cut
This is the perfect style if you don’t want a pair of boots that go too far up your leg, meaning they sit perfectly with jeans. The hardest decision with these is whether to go for them in black or white.

Screen Shot 2019-01-09 at 10.27.33 PM

Style a silky slip dress with a pair of knee-high buckled Western boots, and you’ll feel like the fiercest woman in the world as you strut down the street, trust us.

 Evening Wear
It’s not surprising that cowboy boots don’t feel like the most glamorous shoes. But you might feel differently with a pair made with luxe satin, super high heels and an embellished bow, making these boots the perfect addition to your next night on the town.

Screen Shot 2019-01-09 at 10.34.58 PM

If you’ve scrolled through social media at all this season, you know that animal print is quite literally everywhere. And there’s no better way to rock this trend than with a pair of cowboy boots in a subtle snake print.

Black Out
While this particular pair is a bit out of our price range, a girl can dream (and save up and eventually purchase). A pair of all black boots can go with just about everything from floral dresses to jeans, proving the utter versatility of one great boot.

Fashion Jobs – 7 Trends to Watch for in 2019

Can you believe it… 2019 is just around the corner.  This means ‘new year, new me, new style’. With the New Year coming in, it’s time to bring in some new trends as well. SNTF has compiled a list of the best up and coming trends of 2019 that you’ll be dying to get your hands on ASAP.

While faux fur was a huge thing this year (think fur bombers, teddy bear jackets), in 2019 it will be feathers. Some of you might automatically think bright yellow Big Bird vibes, but don’t worry this is a super classy trend. Replace those faux fur coats (or add to the collection) with feathered jackets, feather detailing on dresses, and even purses. Trust us, this trend will be everywhere this year!

Sage Green
Move over emerald green, there’s a new shade in town. We’ve already seen celebrities rocking this colour in so many different ways. From dresses and skirts to suits and shoes, in 2019, you’ll be able to find nearly everything in sage green.

80’s Wear
Neon, spandex, and all the best of the 80s will be making a comeback. We saw it all in 2018, decades making a nostalgic comeback. The next to arrive is an ode to the 1980s. One of the biggest throwback trends will be denim. The acid wash will be seen nearly everywhere.

Fringe Accessories
Much like the feather trend, we are going to see a lot more fringe – think chic western wear meets high fashion. We predict that this trend will get so big, it will move from just accessories to key outfit staples as well.

Move over Blair Waldorf, 2019 is here to steal your iconic piece back. These won’t be your typical plastic, bright coloured headbands, but more of a fashion statement piece. We’ll see a lot of lace and a lot of large, jewelled pieces. These will be the perfect melody of texture and colour, replacing bulky fashion jewelry.

Square Toe Shoes
This trend works the best in sandals or boots. Rather than the elongating (and usually uncomfortable pointed toe shoes) the square toe makes a statement. Our favourite square-toed shoe style is the ankle boot. Pair these with cropped denim, a mini skirt or a dress and these shoes can go from casual to dressy in an instant.

With the coming of 2019, also comes the bohemian feeling that Crochet gives off. Dresses, tops, sweaters, open weaves, tight crocheting, the options are endless. Crochet is the perfect trend to wear with a casual outfit but still make a statement.

Each decade is known for something. The 50s saw the surge in pop culture, the 60s welcomed The Beatles and the 70s had ‘Hippie Culture’. On top of what a decade was known for, each one has a distinct style to go with it. With every decade there are fashion hits and misses but the hits always make a comeback at different times and seasons. Earlier this year it was the 90s. Now for fall, the 70s are making a serious comeback. Here are some pieces that are a must for this groovy revival.
A complete change from the skin-tight skinny jeans you usually wear, flares have a relaxed fit that is a bit roomier before, as the name suggests, flaring out at the bottom. To have an even more 70’s feel, the high-waisted option is your best choice. Use these jeans in any outfit that you would wear your favourite denim to update your wardrobe.

From jackets to skirts, suede is the go-to material this season. Retire your summer denim skirt and replace it with this season’s suede mini. Pair this skirt with knee-high boots, and a knit sweater, and you’ll have the perfect fall look.

Mustard Yellow
This season, you can find everything in this colour. It automatically makes you smile, and feel like you’ve been hugged by sunshine. There’s no better way to get into the boho feeling of the 70s than adding something into your wardrobe of this colour. Whether it be a statement necklace, a bold bag, cute flats, or a wrap dress, you’ll be able to style it any which way.

Bell Sleeves
This isn’t a trend everyone will want to try. It is bold and super fun. It can be styled like any other cute top in your closet, except, it will have a certain amount of drama with it. This top can be paired with anything from a leather skirt, tailored trousers or distressed denim.

Fashion Jobs - Fall 70's Trends

Long-Sleeved Dresses
Perfect for fall, long-sleeved dresses aren’t only a 70s treasure; they are also great for the cooler weather. To stay on trend, a paisley, maxi long sleeved dress is ideal, but to modernize this trend, a mini dress works too.

Fashion Jobs - 70's Fashion Trends

Outdoor Pyjamas
Who said pyjamas were just for night time? There isn’t anything sexier, or chicer, than a pair of silk outdoor pyjamas. Also, not to mention, they’re super comfortable. Dress these co-ordinates up with a pair of stiletto heels and your favourite clutch for the perfect night out outfit.

Fashion Jobs - 70's Fashion Trends

Tie Front Tops
In 2018, there has been a new twist on the 70s trend of tie front tops. They are no longer only found in crop tops, but long waffle tops, t-shirts, basically any type of top imaginable. This trend is a fun way to make your basic top more fun. Pair a cropped version with a high waisted skirt or a longer top with your favourite pair of denim. This trend has endless options.

Fall might be underway, but it’s safe to say that some of the biggest trends from summer are here to stay. That is with some slight, seasonal adjustments. See the best pieces on our must-shop list now and make these your statement go-to’s for the season.

Belt Bags

Either worn around your waist or across your body, belt bags have spread like the wildfire this season. Appearing on countless influencers, editors, and even celebrities, this is one trend that’s more accessible than ever, thanks to every brand and designer releasing their own version of the belt bag.

Chunky Sneakers
From Gucci and Balenciaga to Chanel and Acne, many of the fashion world’s biggest designers have been releasing their own variation of the fashion-forward chunky sneaker all year long. But luckily for those looking for a more cost-effective option, popular high school brand, Fila, is making a comeback with its iconic Disruptor silhouette. Whether dressed up with a two-piece suit set or styled casually with a wrap dress, you’ll be surprised at how versatile this sneaker style really is.

Top Handle Bag
In the world of bags, the vintage-inspired top-handle silhouette has officially become the ‘It’ bag of the fashion crowd, with tons of new options on the market in a range of price points. What we love about this accessory is that it has a fashion-forward element to it, which is probably why this trend has been a go-to for street-style stars so far this season.

Western Belts
Western-style leather belts can instantly transform a basic fall look of a turtleneck and jeans into a cool and edgy look.

A trend we never thought would make a comeback in bold statement logos, but it’s safe to say we’re so happy that they did. From bags and clutches to tights and everything in between, look like a true style star by wearing your favourite designer’s logo front and center this season.

Fashion Jobs – 7 ’90s Trends That are Coming Back and Here to Stay

Thursday, July 5th, 2018

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada7d4832bbfe5d494b39b70625a6013a24 (1)

Let’s be real, the ’90s were probably one of the best decades we’ve ever gone through. Not only for culture but for fashion as well. Who doesn’t want to have a dance party whenever they hear the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys or N’SYNC?  Fans still love their music so much these groups have even planned mini-comebacks. Who didn’t love Tamagotchi, Pokemon and the fun things you would get in your cereal boxes? While some things should really stay in the ’90s, like the infamous matching denim outfits worn by Britney and Justin, some things were made to last forever, including certain fashion trends.

In the ’90s, chokers were seen on every young woman. The iconic plastic, braided, dark coloured choker was an outfit staple. Now, they are found in velvet, leather or gold, the options are endless. These pieces are no longer seen as ‘teen’ jewellery, but as a real way to accessorize.

Think Mary-Kate and Ashley after the Full House years, styled with cute graphic-tees and colourful crop tops. While they may have been bulky and childish back then, overalls have gotten a total makeover. Overalls are now a made with a sleeker line and a sexier feel. No longer will you feel like a painter, you’ll feel like you’re ready to take on the world.

Denim Skirt

Denim Skirts
One trend we’re thrilled to see making a comeback is denim skirts. making a huge comeback. You can find them distressed, a-line with buttons, or just plain denim. Not only can denim skirts be worn as a fun and flirty outfit to hang out with your friends, but it can also be transitioned for work. Throw on an oversized blazer, a dark denim skirt, a fitted blouse with tights and heels, and you are all set.

2-piece (1)

Two-Piece Matching Sets
As if! Matching sets are as iconic as Cher’s yellow plaid set in Clueless. These sets have now been taken into the 21st century. Not only can you get a coordinating set in tops and skirts, but you can also find flowy trousers and a crop top. The two-piece sets of now make you feel sexier and confident rather than ‘matchy’. They are also super fun to mix and match.

Fanny Packs
Fanny Packs are the most convenient fashion piece you can have. Biking along the Seawall in Vancouver? You don’t want to have to worry about lugging your purse around. Throw your ID, credit cards, cash, or whatever your necessities may be, and carry them around hands-free.

High-Waisted Jeans
They were first introduced in the ‘70s, reborn in the ‘90s, and now they have been completely redesigned today. With more options than just flairs or ill-fitting grunge denim, you can now find the high-waisted ‘mom-jean’, super skinny jeggings, and distressed. Jeans can sometimes be boring, why not have some fun with high-waisted jeans.

Strappy Heels
Circa Sex and the City, strappy heels were everywhere. Who didn’t follow SJP’s character Carrie’s, fashion choices? Everyone wanted those Manolo Blahniks she registered for when she married herself. Strappy heels are a great way to make shoes match every season of outfits. Perfect with a little mini dress or skinny jeans, these heels can be dressed up or down.

Fashion Jobs – Staple Pieces to Take You Through The Summer

Friday, June 22nd, 2018

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in CanadaStyle Nine To Five_Staple Pieces For Summer_Inspiration

As fun as summer style can be, it can sometimes be challenging to find pieces that are not only work appropriate but also worth the price tag, considering the lack of fabric usually involved in summer clothes. Especially with the style trends leaning towards mini and cropped everything it can be harder to nail down those classic pieces that can not only take you through summer at the office but also be worn during the warming spring and fall months. We’re big believers in investing in classic wardrobe choices that will last you over the years and seasons, so we picked out some of our favourite staple pieces to take you through the summer!

Style Nine To Five_Staple Pieces For Summer_Community Howley Blouse Aritzia

The Blouse
A blouse is such a classic and timeless piece to own, a T-Shirt cut is a perfect addition to your wardrobe. Not only do the shortcut sleeves work great for the warmer months, but also can be worn under a blazer or cardigan as it gets cooler, so you have longer to style this piece! We love this one by Community at Aritzia with the perfect balance of a classic cut paired with a slightly oversized fit.

Style Nine To Five_Staple Pieces For Summer_Gucci Princetown Loafers

The Loafers
A shoe that will probably never go out of style is the Gucci Princetown loafer that’s been going strong over the last few years. This full coverage mule is the perfect transitional footwear to take from Spring through to Fall and goes with pretty much everything from sweatpants to skirts making it a great staple loafer. We love the playful embroidery that’s still fun without being too in your face.

Style Nine To Five_Staple Pieces For Summer_Ray-Ban Round Metal 3447 All Black

The Sunnies
It wouldn’t be summer without sunglasses, although if you ask us they can totally be pulled off all year long, especially on those bright snowy days. This is a classic Ray-Ban style that seems to make it’s way back to the trend lists every couple years, so they’re definitely worth buying. We love this blacked out pair but with the Ray-Ban customizing feature online you can create a pair to match your vibe.

Style Nine To Five_Staple Pieces For Summer_All Saints Star Skirt

The Skirt
Denim skirts are totally back onto the “Yes” list this year and we couldn’t be happier to revive our mid-2000’s wardrobe. But if you didn’t think to keep your favourite denim skirt you’re in luck because they are pretty much everywhere. We fell in love with this one from All Saints thanks to it basically being the ideal denim skirt: perfect length that’s not too short but still great on those warm days, the right amount of distressing making them casual-day appropriate and a great shade of blue that right in the middle, being not too light for transitioning into fall.

Style Nine To Five_Staple Pieces For Summer_Brixton Fiddler Cap

The Hat
Baker boy, Fiddler or Captain? Whatever you want to call these caps they’re pretty much THE hat of the last few seasons, pushing out dad caps to take over streetstyle. We have to admit, we probably own more than one and definitively aren’t ashamed of it. This Brixton Fiddler Cap is perfect for the summer with its light coloured and breathable fabric. It also comes in a few colours so if you love it as much as we do you too can own more than one!

Fashion Jobs – 5 Spring Trends to Start Wearing Now

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

Fashion is often looking ahead to the next big trends, and it can definitely be challenging to think about spring fashions while it’s still the dead of winter here in Canada. If you’re looking for a little inspiration on how to incorporate some of this season’s biggest upcoming trends into your existing wardrobe, here are our top five picks for what to look out for on your next shopping trip.

1980’s Glam
Taking inspiration from the decade of indulgence and extravagance, this trend is one to try if you’re looking to stand out in a crowd. For evening, go for pieces with plenty of sequins and volume, but this trend can also work in a daytime setting. Look for oversized sleeves and big shoulders, and try a pleated pant for the ultimate 80’s-inspired outfit.

Trench Coat

Trench Coats
An easy piece to work into your existing wardrobe, a trench coat is a classic that every woman should own. Look for a trench in a draping fabric that can be layered under a heavier coat while the weather is still cool, but can be worn on its own in the coming months. If you’re looking for a trendy option, a patterned or a PVC style is your best bet for spring.

In another nod to the excess and glamour of the 1980’s, fashion houses are going big with their logos this season. To avoid looking like a human billboard, choose one piece with a loud branded graphic to add a hit of personality to any outfit. From sweaters to sneakers to handbags, if you can dream it, chances are there’s a branded fashion piece calling your name.

Called the new “Millennial Pink” by some, “Gen Z Yellow” might just be the perfect colour to inject some spring-time fun into a late winter wardrobe. Ranging from shades of bright yellow to buttery pastels, this vibrant colour has already started hitting major fast fashion retailers like Zara and H&M so you can start embracing the sunshine early.

90’s Accessories
What’s old is new again, so take inspiration from minimalist 90’s accessories this season. Celebs like Gigi Hadid have been spotted in small sunglasses for months, and street style stars have begun embracing scrunchies, banana clips, and chunky hoop earrings again. You may still have some of these lying around the house from the first time they were in style, so go ahead and dust them off this spring!

Fashion Jobs – Trend Alert: Stripes

Thursday, February 15th, 2018

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canadastripes

Similar to polka dots, stripes are one of the most recurring prints in the domain of fashion trends. Vertical or horizontal, wide or slim, stripes are universal and timeless. Even if you’re an individual who shies away from prints, there is still a good chance that you will wear lines once in your life. To fashion experts, stripes are generally considered neutrals because of their versatility. They are so versatile they can be coordinated with other prints and are appropriate for practically any occasion. The comeback of stripes this year timed perfectly with the end of the winter approaching, which is an implication to prep our wardrobe for the warmer seasons ahead! To further hype you up for spring and summer, check out some of these chic striped pieces that are suitable for any outfit!

Striped Top
As if wearing a striped top isn’t a stand out enough, wear one with ruffles or fringe to exude total sophistication like this top from Club Monaco. Also, don’t be daunted to wear horizontal stripes because they exhibit as much style as vertical stripes.

Shop the look: Roverbs Top, $188, available at Club Monaco

Striped Bottoms
Wearing striped pants can be intimidating as it provides more coverage. Two advantages of wearing lines beneath are: they make your legs look a mile long and they instantly dress an outfit up. Coordinate them with a basic top for a balanced look or if you’re adventurous enough, wear a different printed top.

Shop the look: Stripe Trousers, $49.90, available at Zara

Striped Dress
Like striped pants, striped dresses also have the tendency to elongate the body, especially if they go past the knee. Make sure to coordinate with basic accessories to harmonize your overall look.

Shop the look: Fitted Dress, $39.99, available at H&M

Stiped Accessories
Again, if you need that quick statement pop in your outfit, a striped accessory is your friend.

Shop the look: Skinny Striped Silk Scarf, $25.56 available at J.Crew
