Let’s be real – everyone tries to give out advice of some kind or another. That doesn’t mean it’s always good advice. When you’re starting a new career, or are at a crossroads with where you want to go with your career, or you just feel like you’re in a slump, this is when the advice comes the most. With so many different types of advice, it’s hard to know what is always the most beneficial, and what is not. Here at SNTF, we’ve made it easy for you. We’ve compiled a list of the best career advice you could ever receive.

Go Big or Go Home
No goal is too big. If you are afraid of failing, leave the fear behind you and go big or go home. Put your all in everything you do, no matter how menial it may seem. If you give your best and your hardest, you will be rewarded.

Trust Your Gut
That feeling deep inside, whether its excitement, anxiety, fear, or something unsettling, your gut always knows. If you’re unsure about a path to take, trust your instincts. Go with what feels right for you. At the end of the day, you are the one who will make and live with your choices, so follow your intuition and gut feelings.

Pursue Your Passions
No matter what your passion may be, always pursue them. If you don’t you may find yourself unhappy in your career path, wishing that you’d made different choices when you were younger. If you want to pursue a far-fetched dream, make it a realistic goal and go for it.

Be Kind
No matter what career path you may lead, there is always an element of cut-throat competition. Whether it be applying for a position, working towards a promotion, or making that deal. No matter where the pressure may come from, and who you may be competing against, it never hurts to be kind. If you do everything with a smile on your face and help others along the way, you’ll get noticed for all the right reasons. You never know, that person you beat, or who may have beaten you, maybe a connection you need down the road.

Everything Happens for a Reason
As cliché as it may sound, it’s true. Thinking and believing that everything happens for a reason is more than just advice, it’s a way of life. If you fail, don’t get hung up on it. That plan wasn’t meant to happen and you will succeed down the line. Don’t get hung up on the little things, put in the work, and go with the flow.

Gone are the days that Instagram is solely for seeing what your family, friends and favourite celebrities are up to. Instead, it’s quickly become a go-to fashion resource for seeing what your fave influencers and style icons are currently rocking. And the best part is most of the time you can shop the pieces you’ve been eyeing up directly through the ap. Otherwise, you can see where the items are from and buy them conveniently in-store or online later. Today, we’re sharing all the trends we thankfully discovered on Instagram and the trends we purchased as quickly as possible. Get your credit cards ready, ladies.

Plaid
We’re definitely stocking up on chic, plaid pants this fall. We love the edgy nod to the 90s, and not to mention it’s refreshing to see something other than black pants during fall.

Colourful Puffers
Solid black puffers have thankfully been replaced with bold, rainbow-hued shades and now fashion’s biggest ‘it’ girls can be seen donning puffers in crazy colours left, right and centre. Now you just need to decide which colour you like best.

Teddy Coats
Shearling is having a major moment this year. We love how there are so many cute yet feminine teddy bear styles available and typically you don’t have to break the bank to rock this trend.

Statement LBD
Whether you need a dress for the countless holiday parties you have lined up, a frock for New Year’s or maybe you just want to treat yourself to a new LBD, ditch the classic silhouettes and opt for head-turning details. Our Insta feeds have been flooded with playful details like feathers, beading, velvet and oversized shoulders, and we can’t get enough.

Chunky, Combat Boots
We couldn’t end this list without a pair of practical yet ultra fashionable boots and we currently can’t get enough of the chunky, combat boot trend. From monochrome styles to bold whites and reds, a pair of bold combat boots are super comfortable, practical and far from ordinary.

The time has come when your Google calendar is full of events for the holiday season. If the exhaustion burnout won’t get to you, the stress of picking each holiday outfit might. Finding the perfect trends to ‘wow’ everyone with at your next holiday party can be daunting. However, Style Nine to Five have made the task that much easier with our newest compiled list of trends that will win you best dressed at your next holiday party.

 Zz02ZGJjNmNkMWIyMjMyOTE1NTc4YzFiNmU4MTg2NWI0YQ==

Velvet
Velvet is popping up everywhere this holiday season and you have your pick of the lot with this trend. Most comfortable in a jumpsuit, grab a jewel toned velvet one. Want to wear a dress? Grab a burgundy velvet wrap dress. Have your favourite blouse you want to pair with a skirt? There’s a velvet option for that.

 ballet-1-of-1-500x750

Emerald Green
When we think of the holiday season 2018, we think emerald green. From shoes to bags to jackets to tops, this colour is here for the season. Emerald green is the new, elegant colour to replace that traditional Christmas green you have in mind. Best thing yet, you can wear this colour outside of the holiday season.

 midi-skirt-768x1152

Midi – Pleated Skirts
Pair with your favourite sweater to make this skirt scream holiday. Not only will you look super cute, you will also have tonnes of room for when you eat all that yummy holiday food. Most pleated skirts have an elastic waist, making it an ultra-comfortable, yet classic, look.

Metallics
This year, a big trend is to play up metallic tones. If you want to stick with a dress, or a skirt, add a metallic blazer to bring out the festivities. Are you a style risk taker? Break all the traditional holiday party rules and wear metallic trousers and a lace camisole. Your outfit will be the talk of the party. First outfit available at The Latest Scoop!

Two Piece Suit
What demands the attention in the room more than a powerful woman in a suit? This doesn’t have to be your plain jane black, basic suit. You can play with prints and colours, too. If you want to make even more of a statement, skip the shirt all together and use a structured blazer as your top – just make sure it’s still appropriate if it is a work function.

From coast to coast, winter-like weather has arrived in Canada. And while the most obvious footwear women tend to think of when the colder weather hits are bulky and insulated boots, however, there are so many other fashion-forward options available this season that will have you strutting like a style influencer at New York Fashion Week. So rather than adding yet another pair of dull, black boots to your repertoire this season, we wanted to share our favourite footwear trends that are turning heads for all the right reasons and deserve a spot on your winter must-haves list ASAP.

Screen Shot 2018-11-20 at 9.26.36 PM

White Boots
Whoever said don’t wear white after Labour Day clearly wasn’t forecasting one of the season hottest footwear trends: white boots. From pointed and rounded toes to Chelsea style to stiletto heels, white boots are a MUST this season.

Screen Shot 2018-11-20 at 9.34.17 PM

Chunky Sneakers
From Gucci and Balenciaga to Chanel and Acne, many of the fashion world’s biggest designers have been releasing their own variation of the fashion-forward chunky sneaker all year long. But luckily for those looking for a more cost-effective option, basically every other designer has released their own design so you can still rock the trend like the best of them without breaking the bank.

Combat Boots
Another trend we’re super excited to embrace this season is the combat boot trend. We adore this hip yet edgy monochrome number from Dr. Martens — they’re super comfortable, practical and far from ordinary. We’re thanking the fashion gods that this ultra-practical boot became stylish just in time for winter.

Party Heels
From Christmas parties and New Year’s Eve soirees to every other chic event in between, you’re going to need a pair of statement heels that will go with everything you own. And a pair of metallic heels need a place in your closet ASAP if you ask us.

Slouchy Boots
If you’re looking for a fashionable alternative to your go-to knee-high boots, let a pair of slouchy boots be what you go for. Not only do they look extremely luxe, your winter outfits won’t see these amazing boots coming.

Fashion Jobs – How to succeed at Your First Day on the Job

Starting a new job can be intimidating. There’re new people, new processes, new rules and an entirely new routine. That’s a lot to take in for the first day. Luckily, usually on the first day of a new job you aren’t thrown right in to sink or swim. You should be given the tools to start a foundation that you can use every day. That being said, it doesn’t hurt to be extra prepared.

What can you learn about your new company?
If your new company has an Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter – creep it. A lot of companies will have an Instagram story called ‘office life’ or something to that effect. Definitely watch it and study it. What does their day to day look like? Be ready for anything.

What is their ‘style’?
If you’re already watching your new company’s Instagram story about their office culture, study what the staff are wearing. Some companies will call for business casual, but dress up a bit more, whereas others may say business casual and it’s much more casual. This will give you a good gage on to what to wear on your first day.

5b510aafea9711b99ce23b1dce200829

What can you learn about what you’ll be doing?
It’s good to do a refresher of tools you may need. For example, if you’ll be using tools like Photoshop, InDesign, Microsoft Office, it’s good to do a refresher before your first day. Even if you think you know everything you can know about the tools, watch videos, do research, and practice. You want to impress your new coworkers and be able to walk the walk if you talk the talk.

Bring everything they ask for… and more
As a general rule, you’ll be asked to bring in your social insurance number and direct deposit payment information. Go the extra mile, bring some pens and paper to take notes if needed. If you have any questions that have come up before your first day, jot them down. If you have any pre-booked or preplanned vacation dates, make sure you have those on hand as well.

If you show up on your first day prepared and with an open mind, there is no reason why you shouldn’t succeed!

Style Nine to Five - Fashion jobs in Canada

London-Fashion-Week-AW-2018-Street-Style-1-1

What does it truly take to be successful in your career, no matter the industry? For many of us, we’re not too certain where we’ll wind up unless we experience different jobs throughout our career. Even if the job you’re in isn’t one you can see yourself staying in for a long time, always do your best and make it work for YOU.

One piece of advice that I’ve given time and time again in interviews, and when asked how to succeed in the fashion industry or any industry, is to go above and beyond what is asked of you on the job. Sure, this may be something that everyone is used to hearing over and over again from any professional, but I don’t think many people truly understand the importance. For example, many may start working in retail as a means to an end, never thinking that it’ll be the start of their career. What I think people often forget is the fact that many corporate hires from major fashion retailers come from within the company. If you prove yourself from an entry level position as a sales associate, you would be surprised at how many doors open for you.

I remember phoning Le Chateau’s head office as a 17 year old, part time sales associate, to ask about what it takes to get a job in fashion marketing. From then on out, I would create inspiration boards for the sales team during my breaks, just because I wanted to, not because it was required of me from the job. I knew that I had to make the most of what I wanted from the job, and this certainly wasn’t an attitude that I abandoned even as I climbed through the retail ranks to Store Manager and Assistant Menswear Buyer for Le Chateau. As a Store Manager, I would constantly be thinking of new ways to hit and exceed the weekly store goals. Oftentimes, the best results were from the most unconventional of ideas. From getting a popular local DJ to come into the store on a rainy Saturday, to dressing up the entire sales team in Le Chateau’s own dresses to promote the product, I enjoyed my role the most when I kept my mind busy. I think many of us spend our time simply going through the paces on the job, but it really is up to ourselves to create opportunities. When I worked as an Assistant Menswear Buyer for Le Chateau, I would go to other stores on my days off to study the latest trends, and often would buy items that I thought Le Chateau should carry to our weekly meetings. I didn’t let my job title as Assistant Buyer restrict me from doing what I felt needed to be done.

Your personal career growth is up to you and not your management. Create the opportunity for yourself by going above and beyond. Always work towards the position you want, not simply doing enough to get by in the position you have.

Fashion Jobs – Wool Coats That Won’t Break the Bank

The cold weather is not only among us, but it’s also here to stay (and getting worse) at least for the next few months so it’s time to start thinking about our cold weather outerwear. When we think winter we immediately cling to our parkas, which are not only the obvious choice but a practical one at that. No matter how warm, cozy and trendy parkas may be they’re not always the best option especially when it comes to dressing for the office. Bulky parkas can also be a bit of a hassle when commuting to work be it in your car, rideshare or while on transit during rush hour; that’s where wool coats come in handy.

Wool coats are another option to help you stay warm in the winter, and keep your look more refined and polished. There are so many styles and colours to choose from making them versatile for all preferences. If you want your coat to not only look good but keep you warm, we recommend going with something that’s at least at 20% blend. The more wool content within your jacket, the warmer you will be but keep in mind that impacts the price. To help keep you warm and your wallets full we found some great wool coat picks at affordable prices!

STNF_Wool Coats That Won't Break The Bank_Karl Lagerfeld Double-Breasted Wool-Blend Reefer Coat

Classic Coat
Everyone needs a classic wool coat in their wardrobe and who better to turn to than Karl Lagerfeld himself? This double-breasted coast is 23% wool with a belted waist at the back for a fitted look. The Reefer Coat is available in a couple other colours but nothing says classic more than the colour black.

SNTF_Wool Coats That Won't Break The Bank_Zara Menswear Coat

Menswear Inspired
Zara is one of our go-to stores for affordable wool coats that don’t only look good but keep you warm too. This light burgundy double-breasted coat is 52% wool with front flap pockets and a slit at the back. It’s the perfect pop of colour without being too aggressive, and is the perfect jacket for the upcoming holiday season!

STNF_Wool Coats That Won't Break The Bank_Something Navy Double Breasted Topper

Something Navy
If Something Navy sounds familiar it’s because it should. Style blogger Arielle Charna recently launched her first independent brand and we’re obsessed over every piece, including this topper coat. It’s a navy (duh) houndstooth with a power shoulder to envy made with 44% wool. It’s currently on sale at Nordstrom though so I’d act fast before it’s gone.

STNF_Wool Coats That Won't Break The Bank_Oak&Fort Coat 2616

Oversized
What better way to stay warm this winter than wrapping yourself in an oversized wool coat? Well, what if we told you that this is real and doesn’t have to cost you a fortune!? Oak & Fort nailed it with their Coat 2612 thanks to its oversized fit, exaggerated lapels and side pockets to keep those hands toasty. It is the most expensive pick on our list, and a bit of an investment but at over 50% wool it’s well worth it.

STNF_Wool Coats That Won't Break The Bank_H&M Wool-blend Coat

Short & Sweet
If you’re looking for the perfect jacket to wear to the office, for brunch, at the market and for family events this season then you’ve got you covered. This short cut wool-blend jacket has 40% wool with a concealed button closure and pockets. It also comes in two other colours so at that price we don’t blame you for getting more than one!

Fashion Jobs – Get Ahead in Your Career

Friday, November 9th, 2018

Find fashion jobs, job listings, careers, fashion internships, social media internships, retail jobs, fashion design jobs, buying jobs, fashion stylist jobs and style careers on Style Nine to Five!

Fashion Jobs in Canada - Style Nine to FiveChristie Lohr - Fashion Career Advice

I know it’s so easy to fall into the trap of believing that if we just work hard, we’ll eventually be discovered and whisked off for bigger and better things. What we forget is that when it comes to career growth and development, it’s up to ourselves to seek out opportunities. Sometimes that means that we have to ask for what we want; there really isn’t anyone else to do it for us. Yes, that seems like a daunting task initially, but let me shed some more light on this topic and in turn, give you all a well needed confidence boost to just go for it.

I’ve always recognized myself as a bit of an introvert and some of my shyness has stayed with me throughout my fashion career, especially in the beginning. With that said, that has never stopped me from asking for what I want. If you’ve already proven yourself as a reliable employee, then chances are management also recognize the same ability in you. If you don’t vocalize your goals, then who would know to consider you for any new opportunities?

When I did fashion segments on Breakfast Television in 2007 as a representative for Le Chateau (with my appearances coordinated by Le Chateau’s PR), I had the idea to represent myself and showcase other brands by doing style segments as simply ‘Christie Lohr’, and not ‘Christie Lohr of Le Chateau’. I knew I already had an established relationship with Breakfast Television so I went ahead and expressed my interest in being an all-around fashion expert. I sent the email and asked. I knew that showcasing other brands would definitely increase the range of topics that could be discussed on their style segment, therefore appealing to a wider audience. Breakfast Television recognized that too as they agreed it would be a great idea and I then became their fashion expert for the next few years. Later moving on to CTV Morning Live.

If you see an opportunity within your current company or within a personal connection’s company, then express your interest! Start by presenting a reason as to why you think that you could be a great fit for the role and any ideas that you would execute if you did get the job. Most people in management are receptive to ideas promoting the growth of their companies. You’d be surprised at how many people would be willing to give your ideas a shot if you put them forward. Are you into fashion merchandising while you’re in a sales associate role? Then speak openly of your interest and approach your management with your personal inspiration/style boards! The worst someone can say is no, and that really isn’t so bad (it’s not personal, and remember that!).

Around the same year, in 2007, I requested an interview with FASHION Magazine even after 3 internship rejections because I knew in my heart that I could fulfill the position well. They agreed to the interview request and I got the internship in the end. 3 times a charm?

Have you ever had a missed opportunity because you were afraid to express your interest for fear of rejection? Make it a personal resolution to start asking for what you want!

Thanks for reading and for your continued support.

To say this season’s hottest trends are tempting is a serious understatement. The best part is, the key trends for the season have hit both fast fashion and high fashion retailers, so regardless of your budget you can get your hands on this season’s ‘it’ trends which include animal prints, combat boots, puffer coats, plaid and shearling. Scroll down to see our trend pics for this fall and winter and shop them for yourself.

Teddy Coat

Warm and Fuzzy
Shearling is having a major moment this year. We love this cute feminine teddy bear style from H&M because it’s very on trend and you don’t have to break the bank to purchase it.

Kylie Jenner Aritzia Coat

Puffer Coat
Once the cold weather inevitably arrives, a puffer coat will be your best friend. Whether you’re stalking the mean streets, or just battling the elements a puffer that’s equal parts fashionable and practical is a must-have.

Combat Boots

Combat Boots
Another trend we’re super excited to embrace this season is the combat boot trend. We adore this hip yet edgy monochrome number from Dr. Martens — they’re super comfortable, practical and far from ordinary.

Plaid Pants

Plaid Pants
We’re definitely stocking up on chic, plaid pants this fall. We love the edgy nod to the 90s, and not to mention it’s refreshing to see something other than black pants during fall.

Leopard Print Skirt

Animal Print
This trend has finally made a strong comeback, and although in our opinion animal print is timeless, it’s great to see that designers have fully embraced this trend and now you can find animal print everything from tops and blazers to skirts and boots.
