Applying for a job at your dream company can be a daunting task. Landing the interview with that company can be even scarier. Going to that interview, you’ll probably be a little bit nervous but with these tips, you are sure to be prepared.

Prepare your resume and cover letter

The key to even getting an interview is an amazing cover letter and resume. First things first, no more ‘to whom it may concern’. Find out who the hiring manager is and direct your cover letter to them. When you write your cover letter, make sure you personalize it to the company you are applying for. Write what makes you perfect for that specific role at that specific company. These small things go such a long way to getting you noticed.

Do your research

If this is your dream company, then surely you know a lot about it. However, that shouldn’t stop you from doing your research. When was the company founded and by who? Do they have one office or are they global? What are their core values? What does their day to day look like? If they sell product – ensure you know what type of product, materials, what goes into making them and their uses. You want to wow in the interview and knowing your stuff shows you’re committed.

Have questions 

The worst thing you can do at the end of the interview is not have any questions. Make a mental note in your head of a list of questions you may have about the company, the role, or maybe the hiring managers favourite thing about working there. Some of these questions may already be answered in the interview. That just means you can check that one off the list and move on to the next one. Having questions shows you are interested in the position.

However, this is not always true for everyone. Sometimes a job is just a way to make a living. If this is the case, there is still no reason to get bored of your day to day routine. It’s hard not to imagine living on a beach, working remote, travelling the world as a career. This is just not a reality for everyone.

 

Why are you working here?

 

If you think of this daily, it will give you the motivation to work harder. If you wake up every morning and just go through the motions, you’re going to get bored with your work. Why are you in the position you’re in? Why are you with the company you’re with? If you’re there to learn, what is your take away each day? Think about your job more than just a job, but a learning experience.

 

What can you do differently?

 

Maybe you’re trying to find a faster, more efficient way to complete your tasks. Go through the trial and error and find something that works for you.  Keep your routine fresh every day and you won’t lose interest in your job. Even if it’s just changing one simple thing, it can make a world of difference.

 

Invest in yourself

 

If you’re invested in yourself you’ll put more value into your day job. You will take everything you do and see how it is positively affecting your life. What is the bigger value this job or career is bringing you? If you are invested in yourself, you are more likely to put all of you into your tasks and routine. If you’re fully invested, you won’t get bored.

 

Find challenges

 

Don’t ever give up. If a task is challenging, it is easy to just walk away. If you stick with it and succeed, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment. If you step outside your comfort zone, it may be scary, but it is out of your normal routine. Take your time, strategize and challenge yourself.

How to Get Yourself Promoted

1. Develop a Bond With Your Boss: 

Building a positive relationship with your manager or boss will allow them to think of you for future opportunities. This doesn’t mean you need to be best friends, but establish the type of connection where you feel comfortable to approach them and hold a friendly conversation. Let them know what your goals are and the direction you wish to take within the company. Your boss can offer a great form of guidance or mentoring and help you get to where you want to go.

2. Take on More Responsibilities:

Show that you are ready to take on a higher position by asking for additional tasks that will prove you are capable to work a job at the next level. Take initiative and offer your time when volunteers are needed for new assignments. Come in earlier or stay later and be willing to work outside of your job description. If you are able to complete multiple tasks effectively, people will take notice and suggest you are fit for a more complex role.

3. Seek New Skills:

A new job position will require you to be knowledgeable in different areas and obtain certain skills. There can be several employees that are worthy of a promotion, therefore it is important to stand out and have a beneficial skill set. Keep up to date with any technology or systems used on the job and always be aware of what’s happening in the industry outside of the office.

4. Build Your Network:

If you are well known within your field, the more likely your name will be passed around and recommended. Get to know all of the people you work closely with and even those in other departments. Try to socialize and learn new things from colleagues who currently work as your aspiring job title or who have been previously promoted.

5. Have a Voice:

Actively participate during team meetings and state your opinions or ask questions. Come across as someone who is interested in the conversation, rather than never having anything to say. This will demonstrate your value and ability to contribute useful ideas.

6. Ask About it:

This may seem obvious, but sometimes all you need to do is ask! A promotion or job opening may not be brought to your attention simply because no one knew you were interested in the first place. Make it clear that you want to do something new and progress towards a different role. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or feedback on your performance, so you can highlight your recent accomplishments and know how you can improve.

No job interview is complete without the dreaded, “what’s your greatest weakness” question, or some variation of it. Employers love to ask candidates about their professional weaknesses, and what a candidate says in response can reveal a lot about them. I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve received the generic, “I pay too much attention to detail,” another variation of turning an inherent strength into a weakness, or worse “I don’t have any”. Everyone has weaknesses in certain areas; it’s human nature. Trying to pass yourself off as a perfectionist during your interview may not actually work in your favour the way you would expect it to. Be real and be authentic. Always show up to an interview having fully prepared to answer that dreaded question. As an employer, I want to know what you’ve done to overcome a weakness in the past, specifically something that’s related to the workplace and not your personal life. It’s important to maintain professionalism, so choose a weakness that would be of interest to your interviewer.

For example, my personal weakness is that I am disorganized. Being so busy, I want to get everything done ahead of schedule and in the rush to do so, I may just skip a beat along the way. With so much going on, I’m prone to being somewhat scatter-brained and have even missed a few important, scheduled calls in the past. In order to improve and overcome this weakness, I committed to writing everything down in front of me. I knew I had to start doing so as using my phone calendar wasn’t effective for me. Along with writing and documenting everything, I also started creating spreadsheets on Google Docs. The combination of the two has been really effective in helping me get more organized. Although my organization is still something that I’m working on, I can safely say that it’s no longer a hindrance to my ability to be productive while not missing the little details.

 

Whether you share my weakness of disorganization, or have one that’s unique to you, I encourage you to work at improving your negatives so that you can turn it into a great answer to the next “what’s your biggest weakness” interview question.”

We’ve all been there before: You’re at an interview and you know you’re going to be asked: “do you have any questions for me?” The table’s turn and your role switches from being the interviewee to the interviewer.  This moment can work to your benefit, instead of being dreaded. Use these five questions to help you grasp a better insight of your budding future job and make a statement that can turn it into reality.

 

1. Describe the day-to-day tasks that are included in the role?
I’m sure you’ve read over the job posting, rehearsed the qualifications and compared them to the shining star that you are. However, this is a chance for them to give you the inside scoop on the role, and fill you in on anything that wasn’t listed on the application. It’s also an opportunity to discover the layout of the office, see who you would be reporting to or working side by side. It’s an easier way for you to visualize your future daily routine and if it’s the right fit.

 

2. What type of qualities would you like to see in someone excelling in the position?
You’re obviously awesome, not to mention who wouldn’t want you on their team? This is your chance to boost your confidence and compare yourself to the role. You might walk into the interview knowing “you got this” or vice versa and shocked you were selected for a meet and greet. All skills aside, at every workplace it comes down to the personality. This is an opportunity to make your personality shine and relate their expectations to yourself. For instance, bring up a moment where you’ve problem solved or multi-tasked at work.

 

3. Describe the company culture?
A great way to picture yourself in a place is to have them explain to you what makes it so great! Your important and a solid investment to the company. Dig in and find the information you need to see if your new workplace fits as your second home. Because we all know it: regardless of where you work, it’s going to become your secondary residence. Discover their values, what makes them unique and overall aura of staff (aka your new co-workers).

 

4. What do you love most about working for the company and your position?
You’ll most likely be interviewed by your potential superior or the founder of the company. Regardless it’ll be someone who has been with the company for years and can share why they’re passionate about the purpose of their role. You can grab a glimpse of the interviewer’s background and how they made it to where they are now. This can be very motivational, to discover someone else’s success and career path.

 

5. What is the potential career growth for someone in this role?
We all think about our future with a workplace and if we can see long-term happiness. Your skills are important and your hard work should most definitely be recognized. Now is the time to see how you could grow within the company, and how to receive a greater role that can prosper your career.

1. Set Goals, Have A Plan

What’s the key to the master plan working? Knowing that you can never really plan out life, and the plan is more of a template.

 

2. Network Is Your Networth

Talking to your friends and family is always a great way to get advice. But sometimes looking to your professional network to discuss career planning might be more beneficial. Your colleagues and superiors can give you a perspective based on their first-hand experience of you on the job, and the industry you’re in. Whether it’s feedback on your strengths and opportunities or insights on potential opportunities, your professional network is a goldmine of potential.

 

3. Work With A Recruiter

If you’re looking to make a move from your current organization, you might want to try connecting with a recruiter. Once you get to a certain level in your career, the best companies and opportunities are usually filled by a recruitment firm or consultant. Not all recruiters and processes are the same, so we recommend finding someone who specializes in your industry and is dedicated to getting to know you, in order to find the right fit for you. 4. Higher Education

Sometimes that promotion or new opportunity requires a bit more training or education and it’s never too late to head back to class! Some people choose to study a full degree or diploma program, while others might prefer taking a couple courses or getting a certification. There’s an endless supply of free online training that can easily be completed after work, and some companies even offer internal development courses. Whatever way you choose to go, know that education really is power!

 

5. Find A Mentor

One piece of advice any senior level manager or executive will give you, is to find a professional mentor. This is someone who has insight into your industry or company and that can provide you with advice, inspiration and knowledge to help you grow in your career. Look to people within your industry, organization or network who either you would like to learn more from or have enjoyed communicating with. Big organizations often have mentorship programs senior managers and executives participate in, so be sure to take advantage of that.
