Allbirds Shoes Opens Queen Street Pop-Up
San Francisco based Allbirds, which claims to be the world’s most comfortable shoes, has opened up a temporary retail space in Toronto’s fashionable “West Queen West” area. After launching their Canadian e-tail in March and hosting two pop-ups in Nordstrom in Vancouver and Toronto earlier this year, the new space is being used as a test to determine if the company’s next move will be to place permanent brick-and-mortar locations in Canada. Founded in 2014 by former professional soccer player Tim Brown and biotech engineer and renewable materials expert, Joey Zwillinger, Allbirds is formed on the philosophy of using natural materials, and an “ongoing mantra to create better things in a better way.”

You will find pieces from prestigious and staple Italian fashion houses such as Prada, Gucci, Fendi, Valentino, and Moschino. The exhibit is a stroll through Italian fashion history, curator Alessia Tota says, “The items that are on display come from various archival and private collections, making this exhibit truly one-of-a-kind”. Take a look through gowns (some very recognizable!), suits, jewellery and shoes from today until July 3rd.

Vancouver Welcomes First Jimmy Choo Standalone
Vancouver’s Alberni Street is joined by yet another luxury retailer as Jimmy Choo opens its first standalone in Greater Vancouver. The 1,549 square foot space is Canada’s second Jimmy Choo location, the first in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre. Many designer stores have opened standalone locations in the downtown core in Vancouver in the last few years such as Off-White, Saint Laurent, and Moncler.

Fashion Jobs – Styling Palazzo Pants for the Summer

Monday, June 26th, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in CanadaMJ Inspo Image

The summer months are such an exciting time for fashion; the warm weather requires as few layers as possible, meaning creating unique and versatile outfits need careful planning with each piece purchased. Palazzo pants are a fun staple for the warmer months they can be taken from the office to the streets and everywhere in between. They give you something different to play around with rather than a maxi skirt, and unlike a dress can be mixed and matched with different accessories and tops to create a totally different vibe. From classic and timeless to fun and funky styles, we rounded up our favourite palazzo pants for you to experiment with this summer!

1. TOPSHOP Mia Split Palazzo Trousers

Flow With The Trend

A more trend-focused take on the palazzo pant, this style from Topshop is a cropped cut with slits on the sides giving an airy flow — perfect for those hot summer days. The Mia Split Palazzo Trouser comes in navy and this beautiful lilac colour and pairs great with sandals, loafers or a classic white tennis sneaker.

2. CATHERINE MALANDRINO ERLE PALAZZO PANTS

Keeping It Classic

A more traditional look, these Catherine Catherine Malandrino are an easy pick and just had to be on our list. The elegant lace detail on the sides add a bit of personality to these otherwise black trousers, and the waist tie brings the cut in at just the right places. Despite being black, the crepe material of these pants makes them cool and comfy even during a sun-filled day!

3. ZARA HIGH WAIST WIDE TROUSERS

A Mustard Must-Have

How could we not be totally in love with these trousers from Zara, in the perfect colour for summer!? Although, maybe not for everyone, the bright mustard-yellow colour is a bit intimidating at first, but the casualness of their cut, zip up pockets and elastic waistband make them a fun style to play around with. We say pair them with a dark colour band Tee and chunky sandal heel for your next girls night out but hurry, these babies are on sale and definitely won’t last long!

4. MARCIANO AQUATIC FLUX PANT

Mermaid Vibes

Thanks to Marciano, we can all channel our inner mermaid this summer with these uniquely printed palazzo pants. We would put this style at the top of our list for any wedding appropriate outfit and suggest you go super minimal with your choice in accessories for these ones. Dress them up for the office with a good blouse or summer blazer, and change the look up with different waist belts to get some versatility out of these trousers.

5. F21 STRIPED PALAZZO PANTS

Transitional Stripes

Everyone needs at least one pair of striped palazzo pants in their wardrobe and this classic cut pair is just right. Featuring a thin elastic drawstring waist, you can wear these effortlessly with a great top or easily tuck the tie under a belt to add a bit more to your look. The dark colour will have you transitioning these into the warmer fall days with your favourite biker jacket or bomber!

Fashion Jobs – Wide Leg Trousers for Work

Tuesday, June 6th, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada

Ivana Inspirational Image

It was only a matter of time before our tapered dress pants took a backseat to the uber chic wide-leg trouser. More often than not, we find ourselves unsatisfied and uninspired with our work wear, relying on our trusted uniform of dark basics, so the reinstatement of the wide leg trouser couldn’t have come at a better time.

But now that summer is finally within reach, we all could use a few pointers on how to look polished and professional, while still beating the summer heat. We know how much loyalty there is to our trusted skinny and fitted work pants, but we guarantee you’ll feel the ease of a high waist, relaxed fabric for the office within the upcoming months.

Not sure where to begin? We’ve rounded up our favourite wide leg trousers that can easily be incorporated into a summer work wardrobe so you can stay cool and fresh all summer long.

1.The Classic

The Classic

These are officially your new go-to work pants. Not only will they make your legs look nice and long, but also, they are also light in fabric, making them dressy, sophisticated, and perfect for the warmer days ahead. The trick to these smart pants is to choose a neutral colour, like camel, as it’s easier to find tops and shoes to match.

2.Colour CrazeColor Craze

For the creative working woman who’s not afraid of a little colour, then a pair of bold, attention-grabbing trousers are for you. While you still must adhere to all office dress codes, you deserve to show off your personal style and there’s no better way than to add some pops of colour to your work wardrobe. A coloured wide leg pant has a retro feel, but when paired with a light blouse and chunky heels you’ll be looking summer time fresh.

3. In the detailsIn the Details

Small details make all the difference when it comes to style. Working in a conservative work environment often limits you to select colours and prints, but the details are what will make you stand out from the crowd. Something as simple as an exaggerated cuff, a belt, or a fold over waist band will give you an extra edge and bring life to your work wear.

  4.Casual Fridays

Casual Fridays

We all love the end of the work week when we can give our work attire a much-needed break and have some fun with our wardrobe. Casual Fridays are what every fashionista looks forward to, as you can get dressed with ease knowing the weekend is right around the corner. A great option for a relaxed yet refined workday is a printed fabric. From floral to stripe, choosing a pant with a darker base colour and a solid top is key for pulling off an eye-catching print.

5. Cut it short

Cut it Short

For those warmer summer days, a great alternative to wide leg work pants is the cropped trouser. A cropped wide leg is an easy way to create a sporty work style with a pair of pumps for the office, and chic sneakers after hours. You want your crops to be at least five inches above the ankle to elongate your legs.

Fashion Jobs – The Art of Networking

Thursday, March 23rd, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada1. Inspirational Image

Dear fellow fashionistas, let’s take a moment and absorb the ever so valuable advice from the one and only Anna Wintour, “In today’s world you have to interact. You can’t be some difficult, shy person who is not able to look somebody in the face; You have to know how to talk about your vision, your focus and what you believe in.”

2. Anna Wintour QuoteHere we are, ambitious, driven, talented and of course, extremely stylish prospects. Our potential to succeed in the fashion industry is great and there are opportunities floating all around us. But how can we seize these opportunities and meet our full potential? Well, it can all happen with a little tool we refer to as networking.

WHAT: Networking in the fashion industry is connecting with others for an exchange of information with the hopes bettering your career. The keyword we want to focus in on here is connecting. We all have an idea of what it means to network, but the most important part of it does not have to do with just you and how you can advance in your career or how many business cards you can hand out in a day, it’s all about the connection you make with others.

Networking is a natural and free flowing art, without having the intentions of what that other person can do for you but rather who the person you are connecting with is as an individual.

We define networking as not shying away from being your authentic self, always being sincere and respectful of boundaries and ultimately making a valuable connection.

WHY: So why do even bother? Now let’s be honest, we all feel the most secure when we stay within our comfort zones and designated social circles and do what we always do. However, sometimes it’s necessary to put yourself out there and liberate your ideas and opinions outside of your usual circle.

Networking is not something that should be used as a means of self-promotion and advancement in contacts for your business but rather to pursue opportunities that you wouldn’t ordinarily find. We network because we want to learn more about the industry we are trying to get into, and we want to be able to take what we learn and use it to drive us towards achieving our goals and feel confident while doing so. It’s extremely beneficial to be educated about the industry you’re getting into, as it not only helps you figure out exactly what you want but also allows you to be that much more qualified for a position within that given field.

HOW: You can take advantage of networking basically anytime and anywhere. Networking opportunities are all around us: from reaching to a friend of a friend who has your dream job to connecting with someone on LinkedIn who worked for a company you’re dying to work for.

While social media platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram are great for connecting with like-minded individuals, the most powerful way to network is through face-to-face interaction rather than just staying within the limits of online.

The key here is to stay open minded, friendly, sociable, approachable and curious. Always be curious about who you interact with as you never know what you can learn from them and vice versa. Curiosity can lead to asking for opportunities, opportunities to speak with an industry professional and learn about what they do and receive advice rather than asking for employment. To network, you must be willing to ask questions, listen intently and learn.

So, ladies, turn off your Netflix, put your phone on silent and get out of your house for a while; explore, interact and network.  Over time, you’ll find that you’ve built up an organic list of professional relationships that you share your passions and ideas with that will help you get closer to landing the fashion job of your dreams.

Fashion Jobs – Spring Weather Ready Bags

Tuesday, March 21st, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada

1. Inspirational Image

Spring has sprung! And with the change of seasons comes a perfectly valid reason to revamp our closets with a little shopping spree, right? Spring is definitely the harder of the two transitional months to navigate when it comes to outfit choices; the cravings for summer sun and sandals get trumped by rainy days and Wellies. Our purse choices are just as difficult, as we fight wanting to bust out our favourite white tote, while muddy streets just aren’t cooperating. We thought we’d help you with these internal struggles by sharing some of our favourite spring weather ready bags!

1. Mackage Emilee Weekender

It’s All In The Bag

Who said Weekender bags are only for weekends? This quilted Mackage Weekender bag is perfect for those transition days with melting snow banks and puddles thanks to its wipeable polyester outer shell. Equipped with interior compartments and plenty of room for your work and personal items (and coat on those warmer afternoons), the Emilee tote is an easy choice for spring!

2.Bucket Bag

On The Bucket List

A must-have in every purse collection, bucket bags are perfect for those who don’t mind the lack of structuredness this shape brings. This faux leather bucket bag by Forever21 is the perfect size to fit your daily essentials and its over the shoulder strap makes it the perfect bag to use when taking transit to work or when toting around your laptop or other work essentials.

3. Gucci Soho Disco Bag

A Classic For Spring

No stranger to most of us, the Gucci Soho Disco bag is a classic that usually gets a seasonal colour refresh, and this Rose Beige version is the perfect hue for spring! Its over the shoulder strap and small size make it easy to shield from rain under your umbrella — which is essential for the inevitable drizzly spring days. This trendsetting number is the ideal bag to bring to work on a Friday when après-work dinner and drinks are on the agenda.

4. Zara Technical Backpack

Technical Support

Backpacks are (thankfully) staying for another round, and this nylon drawstring number from Zara is on the top of our spring shopping list for its functionality and style. Dual zip-up front pockets are perfect for your phone and music needs, especially if you’re someone who bikes to work, not to mention it’s the perfect size to fit your laptop and personal things!

5. Aldo Tote 2

Spring Shoulder Fling

This wouldn’t be a spring style list without some florals! This Aldo beauty comes in a variety of colours, but this floral pattern is perfect for camouflaging any dirt or stains you might pick up from muddy or rainy streets, and its varying strap options makes it a versatile pick.

6. Rag and Bone FannyPack

Trendy & Compact

Popping up everywhere this spring is fanny packs of all sorts, and we have to admit we’re kind of into it. Perfect for running errands or on those days where you’re carrying five tote bags and a laptop into the office (we’ve all been there), this Rag & Bone leather fanny is the perfect mix of practical and chic with multiple compartments and its grained black leather finish.

Fashion Jobs – 3 Easy Ways to Go From Desk to Date

Tuesday, February 9th, 2016

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs

Seeing that Valentines Day is just around the corner, this past weekend I ventured out to the mall in search of an outfit that would knock my man’s socks off. After wandering in and out of stores for about 40 minutes, I had found a drop-dead gorgeous dress and the perfect accessories—shoes and clutch included—to pull together the whole look. I was absolutely shocked that I got all that shopping done in under and hour. With an armful of shopping bags, I made my way back to the parking lot thinking, “how the heck did I manage to get all of this shopping done so quickly?” The last time I had a V-Day date, I spent 4 hours mulling over what to wear to impress my then significant other. As I tossed my purchases into the trunk of my car, the answer to my question suddenly hit me: Valentine’s Day fell on a weekday. Since I was going straight from work to my date, I had to create an outfit that would seamlessly transition from day to night, which proved to be a difficult task since it took me 4 hours to achieve. (Thank goodness Valentine’s Day is on a Saturday this year!) That day I learned a few great lessons about transitioning a nine-to-five look into a date night look, and I have decided to share them with you. These style hacks can be applied to just about any work-to-date night situation, whether it be a Valentine’s dinner with your sweetie or your first Tinder date.

look-1

Choosing a key piece that is appropriate for both the office and your date venue is one of the easiest ways to make an outfit work for day and night. Let’s say you’re going to a basketball game, choose a pant that is both tailored and casual, such as these Babaton jogger-inspired trousers, in order to create a look that is work and courtside appropriate. For the office, add a classic pump, some minimalist jewellery and a waistcoat to dress up the trousers. Before you head off to the game, hop out of those heels and into a pair to comfy kicks. Adding a bomber jacket and a leather cap will give the look a bit of edge. Your date will have no clue you just came straight from the office.

look-2

Going on a romantic dinner date after work and don’t know what to wear? Don’t fret because the perfect transitional piece is probably hanging in your closet right now: the LBD (little black dress). For a conservative office look, pair your LBD with some simple pearl earrings, a timeless watch, a big tote bag that you can toss your laptop in while running from meeting to meeting and a printed mid-heel for visual interest. When the day is over, swap out the tote bag for a wristlet like this one from Kate Spade. With multiple card slots, a built-in mirror and an iPhone 6 compartment, it is the ultimate day to evening wristlet. Give the look a touch of romance and sex appeal by swapping out your office earrings and heels for a pair of floral drop earrings and a black wraparound heel. Don’t lose the watch because you definitely do not want to keep your date waiting.

look-3

By day, these coated ankle-jeans and relaxed-fit blazer are the basis for a sophisticated ‘casual Friday’ office look. Just add a lightweight sweater, some simple accessories and an edgy bootie, and you have a great outfit. For a Friday night pub-crawl date, exchange the basics for pieces that add drama, like this leopard-print blouse and beaded tassel earrings. Hopping from one bar to the next can be hard on the feet, so don’t toss out the booties when you’re switching into your night look—trust me, you’ll need them. Blazers have the tendency to make you feel a bit stuffy, so drape the blazer over your shoulders to create an effortless and chic look for your wild night out on the town.

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Nouveau Nineties

Friday, March 7th, 2014

ST95-ADS

By now we’re all aware that the ’90s are back in a big way. But the trend we thought would last only one season has staying power for spring. So, what pieces are best left at the thrift shop and what ones will give your wardrobe a spring facelift?

 shirt2

Flannel

Because this new incarnation of the ’90s focuses largely on grunge-era fashion, consider wearing a plaid shirt in place of your usual cardigan. The effect is a nod to the ’90s without looking like you’re going to a Pearl Jam concert.

 overalls3

Overalls

From hip-hop dancers to schoolyard tots, everyone in the ’90s rocked overalls. Try a hipster look by sporting them with an oversized cardigan, or up the chic-factor by slipping a fitted, Breton-striped top on underneath. Pair them with killer heels for the ultimate high-low mix.

boots2

Combat boots

Combat boots are great on these treacherous, ice-y Canadian sidewalks. But practicality aside, the way they add edge to everything from dresses to a tights and shorts combo make them the perfect footwear to see out the rest of the winter.

 doctorsbag

Doctor’s Bags

Doctor’s bags are a true ’90s throwback- everyone from Seinfeld’s Elaine to Courtney love had one. Add one to your look to take a break from your worn-to-death cross body bag. Their structured shape makes it easy to carry all you need!

No matter if you decide to scour a thrift shop or buy new versions, these ’90s staples will give your spring wardrobe some edge and a dose of retro charm… Maybe you’ll even stuff a few season DVDs of Seinfeld into that doctor’s bag and fill your iPod with the greats of grunge…. Either way, you know you’ll be stylish in any era!

1. A.P.C. Plaid Shirt, $250, available at My Theresa

2. River Island Overalls, $84

3. Maurice Combat Boots, $49

4. Chiarugi Doctor’s Bag, $665, available Forzieri

Adding a splash of colour to your winter wardrobe is a perfect way to rid yourself of the cold-weather, winter blues. You don’t need a whole new set of clothes, just adding a few bright pieces to your looks will help you put the excitement back into your closet. Simple accessories like scarves and purses are a great way to brighten up your look. Scarves are especially great because they instantly illuminate your face.Stuck in drab office wear?  Pairing your work outfits with bright blazers will help brighten up the ol’ 9 to 5 look. Also, since every wardrobe should have a little black dress, you should also have a classic little dress in one of your favorite colours, that isn’t black..

1. ModCloth Auntie Emerald Bag, $65

2. Forever 21 Borrowed From the Boys Blazer, $36
