You’ve hit ‘send’ on your application or have just finished a great job interview—now it’s time to plan your follow-up! As seen in the Girlboss newsletter, Style Nine to Five’s career expert, Christie Lohr, shares her tips on following up the right way.
Word it wisely. A busy hiring manager doesn’t want to receive a novel-length email, so keep your follow-up short but personalized. Avoid copy-paste syndrome where you send the same generic follow-up for every job you apply for. Instead, tailor your note to the role at hand. Mention a highlight from your interview or something from the job description that lights you up.
Time it right. You might think getting in touch too soon will come across as pesky, but sending a thank you note the same day or the next day communicates your enthusiasm and keeps you top of mind. If you’re sending a second follow-up, give it about a week before pinging them again.
Offer something new. Keep the conversation going and continue to toot your horn by taking your follow-up as an opportunity to share a link to your website or LinkedIn profile. You can also attach a portfolio to your follow-up, letting them know you’re eager to show them more of your work.
Express gratitude. It’s not all about you and talking up your strengths—a follow-up note also lets you thank the hiring manager for their time. Let them know how much you appreciated talking with them in your interview or how grateful you are that they’re taking the time to consider you for the job. Everyone likes to feel appreciated, and showing gratitude helps your personality shine.
