Fashion Jobs – How to Pick the Perfect Dress to Wear Over the Holidays

Now that the holidays are here, it’s time to put together the perfect outfit for your upcoming Christmas get-togethers. You may be time constrained, but it is always helpful to have a set of “mini” criteria when searching for that perfect holiday dress. This way, you are not flustered and anxious in the mall, with all those great promotions happening and crazy crowds you have to deal with. Of course, we all desire for a glitzy dress for the party but there are so much more to consider rather than completely adhering to the agreed holiday theme. We’ve laid out a set of standards that you can use as a guideline if you still need to pick up a last-minute-dress

Wrap Dress

Tip 1: Pick a dress that complements your body type
Petite girls should stick to short form-fitting dresses to accentuate their figure. If you’re choosing an asymmetrical dress, make sure to pair it with heels for a balanced look. Add a belt to not only accessorize but also to elongate your legs and bring out the waist. For taller girls, midi dresses are recommended.

Red Dress

Tip 2: Pick a dress that provides adequate body coverage
Although many would say “do it for the fashion”, it also never hurts to be practical because of the cold weather. Instead of wanting to look risqué all the time, you may consider wearing dresses with a turtleneck detail or long sleeves.

Velvet dress

Tip 3: Pick a dress with thicker fabric
In correlation to the above tip, pick dresses that have sensible fabrics including wool, cashmere, or velvet. There are many knit dresses that are versatile and can be worn as transitional day-to-night pieces.

Feather Dress
Tip 4: Pick a dress that lets you stand out
Holiday-themed parties are all about the sparkles and Christmas colours but there are so many other styles out there that can still induce conversations and ultimately, allow you to stand out! Consider wearing a dress with exaggerated sleeves, feathers, textures or unique prints!

Fashion Jobs – From Desk to Dazzling: The Do’s and Don’t’s of Office Party Dressing

Wednesday, December 9th, 2015

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs2b77e8e6c23d5fc97452a64b435e0f67It’s that time of year again- the office holiday party! Some love it, some may hate it but nevertheless it’s a great chance to showcase your personal style, especially if you work in an office that usually has a very drab dress code. However, there are some things you need to consider before showing up to the party, to ensure you look your best and keep the respect of your coworkers (and your boss!).

Consider the venue of your holiday party. If it’s at a casual restaurant, there’s no need to go over the top with your outfit. On the other hand, if it’s a large formal evening affair, make sure you put effort into how you look!

Stay modest! You may want to wear something more revealing than the frumpy suit you wear every other regular day, but it’s not worth risking your reputation at work or losing respect. You can still look glamourous without baring it all.

Remain true to your personal style. Don’t bother wearing something you feel doesn’t suit you or you’re not comfortable in because it will only prevent you from having fun at the party. Don’t try to be something you’re not just because you want to impress others, you probably already impress them enough in the workplace!

Be festive! No, this doesn’t mean you have to wear head to toe red and green, but it’s always fun to add a bit of holiday spirit to an outfit for a party. It can be as simple as wearing something with sparkle or sporting a red lip.

Most of all, enjoy yourself! The whole point of an office party is for people to relax, mingle and have fun, it’s not a wardrobe competition. As long as you pick something appropriate and you feel good in, it’ll be a party to remember.

Here are some great options for holiday office party wear:

1. Closet Skater Dress, $117, available at ASOS

2. Zara Silver Pleated Skirt, $49

3. Deletta Garden Guise Top, US $88, available at Anthropologie

4. Banana Republic Metallic Blazer, $198

5. Express Black and White Striped Pants, $79

6. Chelsea28 Metallic Surplice Blouse, $95, available at Nordstrom

Fashion Jobs – Day-to-Night: Sparkle With Robson

With holiday season fast approaching, you may find your schedule completely filled up with parties, gatherings, and other socials, be it for work or leisure. Regardless of the occasion, mastering the art of transitioning your daytime look into the evening will be crucial, especially if you want to cut out unnecessary travel and touch-up time. Who wants to make the trek back home in order to get ready for the evening’s events, when you can do so by swapping out a few pieces, easily stored in a tote bag or your car trunk? I don’t!

See how Style Nine to Five’s founder Christie Lohr transformed one dress from day-to-night with pieces from Vancouver’s shopping destination Robson Street.

One clever way to turn an evening dress into an office appropriate piece is by layering a sweater over top of it. Of course, you want to pay attention to the hemline length, as micro-minis are definitely still not work-safe. In my case, I chose a lace dress that fell just above my knee, and layered on a chunky, knit funnel neck sweater. To further tame the dress for day, I wore opaque black tights and sturdy ankle boots. A wide-brimmed hat and a functional black bag finished up my daytime outfit.Fashion Jobs - Robson Street StyleFashion Jobs - Robson Street StyleFashion Jobs - Robson Street StyleFashion Jobs - Robson Street Style

When it came time to transition my look into night, I swapped out my sweater for a luxe, faux fur coat (which you can wear as your daytime coat), removed the nylons altogether, opted to change into a pair of sparkly pumps, and replaced the larger work bag with a clutch. Overall, just by swapping and/ or removing a few pieces, my outfit was completely transformed.

The second component of any great evening look (outfit aside), is some glam make-up and hair. Luckily, you can drop by the newly opened Sephora on Robson Street, which has a full service beauty salon located upstairs from the main retail section, for an evening touch-up, whether you have 15 minutes or 45 minutes for a custom makeover.
