Five tips to guarantee you stay à la mode while working in the fashion industry.
1. Keep Up With The Latest Tech
It is clear that we are currently in the midst of a digital revolution that is breaking down the barriers of all traditional forms of media, which is, without a doubt, greatly influencing the industry. Completely digital based publications and platforms are where the future of the fashion industry is headed. For this reason, it is essential to have substantial knowledge of the latest trends in cutting-edge electronics as well as remain familiar with the newest social media websites and apps. It is also paramount to consistently continue to be active on these outlets (no matter how senior or established you are) to ensure you are retaining a connection with the audience you hope to resonate with on a personal level (for example, future employers, colleagues, industry connections etc.) or professionally through the company you are working for. As a millennial, you should embrace your advanced understanding and vast experience with technology. This is a strength you should be nurturing for the future.
2. Know Your Stuff
For your opinion to be taken seriously, you must demonstrate to others that you know what you are talking about. This means, being well informed of new and past trends, knowing designers, art history, photographers as well as important social, political, pop culture and fashion related events through history. Being able to rightly reference something when speaking to your superiors will automatically elevate you from your peers. There will never be a time where expertise and knowledge is not in demand in the workplace. Therefore, your skills will always be deemed valuable. A few excellent ways to educate yourself are by reading a lot (online articles and print resources), watching documentaries, taking classes, asking a lot of questions and being constantly observant.
3. Maintain Connections
When aiming to cultivate a successful career, it is hugely important to network. Networking is all about creating personal relationships with people that could hopefully help you move forward. Once you’ve made these connections, it is important to maintain them. By keeping contact with others in the industry, you are guaranteed to stay up to date on all social or industry affiliated topics. By being in the loop, you are inevitably allowing yourself to flourish. One of the main ways you are going to consistently stay relevant, is by consistently trying to further understand and cater to the needs of your peers, your audience and your superiors. When you decide to give up on maintaining and strengthening those bonds, you are essentially giving up on growing your skills and career as an industry professional. A great way to keep in touch with your connections is through social media, friendly e-mails and attending industry events.
4. Learn the Lingo
Communication is key. Using appropriate vocabulary (whether it is a form of slang or technical terminology) when discussing art, fashion, history and design is crucial when interacting with coworkers. Being capable of using what some call “fashion speak” will enhance your credibility and will give you an edge. This goes hand in hand with knowing your stuff (as mentioned above). Doing research, learning fashion and art history as well as paying attention to pop culture will help you remain informed of any new lingo. This will help you effectively reference information when speaking in a professional setting. Knowing the proper language will help you preserve a favorable reputation at the office.

5. Adaptable Attitude
One way of making sure you will remain relevant through times of change within the industry is by being able to easily adapt to new situations. Being capable of effortlessly adjusting to change, whether it is working with new people, embracing new technologies or entering a different environment, will help you remain an asset to your workplace. Learning to be flexible will benefit you on the long run. Instead of fearing the future, you will learn to welcome it, which will no doubt not go unnoticed by your bosses. People will unceasingly want to hire outgoing and audacious individuals. So, always be prepared for a challenge!
