Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs

Seeing that Valentines Day is just around the corner, this past weekend I ventured out to the mall in search of an outfit that would knock my man’s socks off. After wandering in and out of stores for about 40 minutes, I had found a drop-dead gorgeous dress and the perfect accessories—shoes and clutch included—to pull together the whole look. I was absolutely shocked that I got all that shopping done in under and hour. With an armful of shopping bags, I made my way back to the parking lot thinking, “how the heck did I manage to get all of this shopping done so quickly?” The last time I had a V-Day date, I spent 4 hours mulling over what to wear to impress my then significant other. As I tossed my purchases into the trunk of my car, the answer to my question suddenly hit me: Valentine’s Day fell on a weekday. Since I was going straight from work to my date, I had to create an outfit that would seamlessly transition from day to night, which proved to be a difficult task since it took me 4 hours to achieve. (Thank goodness Valentine’s Day is on a Saturday this year!) That day I learned a few great lessons about transitioning a nine-to-five look into a date night look, and I have decided to share them with you. These style hacks can be applied to just about any work-to-date night situation, whether it be a Valentine’s dinner with your sweetie or your first Tinder date.

look-1

Choosing a key piece that is appropriate for both the office and your date venue is one of the easiest ways to make an outfit work for day and night. Let’s say you’re going to a basketball game, choose a pant that is both tailored and casual, such as these Babaton jogger-inspired trousers, in order to create a look that is work and courtside appropriate. For the office, add a classic pump, some minimalist jewellery and a waistcoat to dress up the trousers. Before you head off to the game, hop out of those heels and into a pair to comfy kicks. Adding a bomber jacket and a leather cap will give the look a bit of edge. Your date will have no clue you just came straight from the office.

look-2

Going on a romantic dinner date after work and don’t know what to wear? Don’t fret because the perfect transitional piece is probably hanging in your closet right now: the LBD (little black dress). For a conservative office look, pair your LBD with some simple pearl earrings, a timeless watch, a big tote bag that you can toss your laptop in while running from meeting to meeting and a printed mid-heel for visual interest. When the day is over, swap out the tote bag for a wristlet like this one from Kate Spade. With multiple card slots, a built-in mirror and an iPhone 6 compartment, it is the ultimate day to evening wristlet. Give the look a touch of romance and sex appeal by swapping out your office earrings and heels for a pair of floral drop earrings and a black wraparound heel. Don’t lose the watch because you definitely do not want to keep your date waiting.

look-3

By day, these coated ankle-jeans and relaxed-fit blazer are the basis for a sophisticated ‘casual Friday’ office look. Just add a lightweight sweater, some simple accessories and an edgy bootie, and you have a great outfit. For a Friday night pub-crawl date, exchange the basics for pieces that add drama, like this leopard-print blouse and beaded tassel earrings. Hopping from one bar to the next can be hard on the feet, so don’t toss out the booties when you’re switching into your night look—trust me, you’ll need them. Blazers have the tendency to make you feel a bit stuffy, so drape the blazer over your shoulders to create an effortless and chic look for your wild night out on the town.

Fashion Jobs – The New Dressy

ST95-ADS

To me, a white button up is the ultimate staple in masculine dressing. Pairing this versatile item with a pair of shorts adds the perfect touch of femininity. My favourite type of shorts to pair this with are high-waisted cut offs along with some lace up sandals. Messily tuck in the button-up for an undone yet sophisticated look. For a more feminine look, pair a slim-fitting silk dress shirt with shorts in a matching colour. I love to pair navy with navy for this look and top it off with a pair of chunky heels. For an edgier look, I wear my silk black shorts with a sheer black dress shirt and pointed-toe booties. Pairing a dress shirt with shorts is so versatile, and can so easily be changed with a few simple accessories to create an effortless outfit.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – California Love

Sunday, July 28th, 2013

5 (1)6 (1)

For years, the easy-living style inspired by the people of California has been revered. There are many tutorials on how to achieve the perfect Cali hair and makeup, and this season, the fashion sense of the West coast has come into the spotlight. Determining what the California style is can be tricky. The primary components of it would be: neon colours, prints, jean shorts and metallics. When it comes to Cali style, it is best to remember that the outfits should be effortless, and should have a relaxed beachy vibe to them. Although these pieces may be difficult to wear when you’re not hanging out on the Venice Beach strip, incorporating certain aspects of the style should be easy. Metallics and neons can be easily paired with jeans or other neutrals. Bright prints work best on a dress, and the recent rise of the high-waisted jean short makes it easy to pair it with a crop top or a tucked in tee. This season, wearing California inspired style is as easy as hanging out on the beach enjoying the surfers and the sun.

I remember watching old episodes of Beverly Hills 90210, and making fun of their horrible style choices. Neon colours and high waisted cut offs? yuck… but as of late I’ve been singing to a different tune. All the fun of the early 90’s is back, (ok not all, but that’s a good thing) and better than ever. We’ve seen the bright colours, geometric shapes, and the biggest trend of them all, high waisted cut offs. With their cool, stylish demeanor, everyone has been rocking them this summer, including me. They’re fun and super easy to accessorize. With a wide variety of colours and patterns, this summer trend will have you showing off your stems all season long.

3. Forever 21 Destroyed Denim cut off $23.80

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Osheaga Style

Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

1                   2 3 4 56

Festivals have long been a source of fantastic fashion, often taking a modern interpretation of festival fashion from the early 60s, when Woodstock and other huge events were in their hay day. Early next month, comes Canada’s biggest music fest, Osheaga. If you haven’t heard of this festival, it’s a three day extravaganza held in the center of one of the best cities in the world – Montreal. This year’s line-up is sure to be a memorable one, a veritable who’s who of both International and Canadian music.

When packing for a festival, it’s important to take a few factors in to account. One, make sure you pack suitable rain gear – being caught in the rain isn’t much fun when you’re on the grounds for several hours. Also, make sure to pack for the other extreme – heat. Other than weather, make sure to bring a pair of comfortable shoes, and a great pair of sunglasses. Here are our festival ready picks for Osheaga 2013.

1. For Love & Lemons Arizona dress, $150
2. Novella Royale Lady jumpsuit, $165
3. Moto Bleach Denim Long Leg Dungarees, $55.00, available at TOPSHOP
4. Desert Child Crochet Top, $50.20, available at Nasty Gal

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Backless Obsession

Friday, June 7th, 2013

Bare those back ladies! This summer, nothing yells out “sizzle” more than a bareless backside. Everyone is doing is doing it from your favourite celebs, socialites and all round fashionistas. The backless trend has brought a different approach to the mysterious and subtle look. For those who don’t like to show off a lot of cleavage, here is a look for every kind of woman. Let’s not forget the emphasis on that booty depending on how low you go to go.

This look can work both for a casual, every day ensemble as well as elegant evening wear. Materials can also vary from plain cotton and jersey to dazzling sequins and lace fabrics. A personal favourite of mine, this summer it’s all about “bringing sexy back”.

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Layering Essentials

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Slips, camis and seamless bodysuits are all often forgotten essentials to the outfitting process. These layering items are integral to providing the right support and look to any number of outfits, especially in the summer, when fabric tends to be particular sheer.

When finding that perfect slip for your favourite summer dress, you have a couple of options. Most slips tend to be seamless, which works best for layering. Silk is often the best fabric for slips since it tends to hang loosely and is slippery against most cotton fabrics that are widely used in summer apparel. For silk dress slips, Aritzia carries a few options that are reasonably priced, starting at $65.

Seamless Spandex/Nylon body-hugging slips are also a popular option and provide support and body contouring in addition to their layering use. Free People offers a number of seamless slip option, my favourites being the Seamless Mini and Seamless Romper.

Transitioning certain summer pieces to the office can often be tricky, but with the right cami, it can be a piece of piece of cake. Basic seamless tanks offer additional coverage, like American Apparel’s Baby Rip Tank Top, in either racerback or spaghetti strap options. For a daintier look, try a lace & silk combination tank top like Dolce & Gabbana’s ultra-feminine version. Similarly, half-slips work fantastically under office skirts, and lace trimmed ones, like Ruche’s tiered version, offers up a bit of interest and added detailing. From basic to lacey and girly, layering pieces are a definite spring/summer necessity.

1. Wilfred Aube Slip Dress, $65, available at Aritzia
2. FP Intimately Seamless Mini, $28.43, available at Free People
3. FP Intimately Seamless Romper, $38.59, available at Free People

5. Dolce & Gabana Floral Crepe Top, $670, available at My Theresa
6. Antique Lace Half Slip, $28.99, available at Ruche

Montreal Fashion Jobs – The Gentleman’s Style Guide: First Date Edition

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Let’s get serious guys, when it comes to first date jitters you can relax and let your personality shine, we here at Style Nine To Five have got you covered when it comes to what-to-wear. Step 1: Don’t over think it. You never want to be overdressed on a first date, but you also don’t want to be underdressed either. Dress for comfort, and make sure your shirts are pressed, your jeans are washed; as is your hair! Step 2: Trust your gut and disregard everything your roommate tells you! He probably doesn’t even own a clean pair of socks that match. Wear what feels comfortable to you, but take certain style cues from guys in the public eye like Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling who are regularly on the best-dressed lists and truly know how to wear the basics. Crew necks in black, or charcoal grey are a great staple and pair perfectly with a classic pair of indigo denim. Effortless style and a winning personality are what are going to give you points this first time around. Step 3: The most important of all – Don’t forget your smile, it’s your best accessory.
