Career Tips – 6 Tips for Getting Yourself Promoted

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada

How to Get Yourself Promoted

1. Develop a Bond With Your Boss:

Building a positive relationship with your manager or boss will allow them to think of you for future opportunities. This doesn’t mean you need to be best friends, but establish the type of connection where you feel comfortable to approach them and hold a friendly conversation. Let them know what your goals are and the direction you wish to take within the company. Your boss can offer a great form of guidance or mentoring and help you get to where you want to go.

2. Take on More Responsibilities:

Show that you are ready to take on a higher position by asking for additional tasks that will prove you are capable to work a job at the next level. Take initiative and offer your time when volunteers are needed for new assignments. Come in earlier or stay later and be willing to work outside of your job description. If you are able to complete multiple tasks effectively, people will take notice and suggest you are fit for a more complex role.

3. Seek New Skills:

A new job position will require you to be knowledgeable in different areas and obtain certain skills. There can be several employees that are worthy of a promotion, therefore it is important to stand out and have a beneficial skill set. Keep up to date with any technology or systems used on the job and always be aware of what’s happening in the industry outside of the office.

4. Build Your Network:

If you are well known within your field, the more likely your name will be passed around and recommended. Get to know all of the people you work closely with and even those in other departments. Try to socialize and learn new things from colleagues who currently work as your aspiring job title or who have been previously promoted.

5. Have a Voice:

Actively participate during team meetings and state your opinions or ask questions. Come across as someone who is interested in the conversation, rather than never having anything to say. This will demonstrate your value and ability to contribute useful ideas.

6. Ask About it:

This may seem obvious, but sometimes all you need to do is ask! A promotion or job opening may not be brought to your attention simply because no one knew you were interested in the first place. Make it clear that you want to do something new and progress towards a different role. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or feedback on your performance, so you can highlight your recent accomplishments and know how you can improve.

Fashion Jobs – Interview Question: What are your Weaknesses?

Interview Tips - Christie Lohr Style Nine to Five

No job interview is complete without the dreaded, “what’s your greatest weakness” question, or some variation of it. Employers love to ask candidates about their professional weaknesses, and what a candidate says in response can reveal a lot about them. I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve received the generic, “I pay too much attention to detail,” another variation of turning an inherent strength into a weakness, or worse “I don’t have any”. Everyone has weaknesses in certain areas; it’s human nature. Trying to pass yourself off as a perfectionist during your interview may not actually work in your favour the way you would expect it to. Be real and be authentic. Always show up to an interview having fully prepared to answer that dreaded question. As an employer, I want to know what you’ve done to overcome a weakness in the past, specifically something that’s related to the workplace and not your personal life. It’s important to maintain professionalism, so choose a weakness that would be of interest to your interviewer.

brunette the label

For example, my personal weakness is that I am disorganized. Being so busy, I want to get everything done ahead of schedule and in the rush to do so, I may just skip a beat along the way. With so much going on, I’m prone to being somewhat scatter-brained and have even missed a few important, scheduled calls in the past. In order to improve and overcome this weakness, I committed to writing everything down in front of me. I knew I had to start doing so as using my phone calendar wasn’t effective for me. Along with writing and documenting everything, I also started creating spreadsheets on Google Docs. The combination of the two has been really effective in helping me get more organized. Although my organization is still something that I’m working on, I can safely say that it’s no longer a hindrance to my ability to be productive while not missing the little details.

Whether you share my weakness of disorganization, or have one that’s unique to you, I encourage you to work at improving your negatives so that you can turn it into a great answer to the next “what’s your biggest weakness” interview question.”

5 Plus Size Luxury Fashion Hacks
But friends, times they are a-changin’ and more and more designers are becoming exclusive to all sizes and shapes. Christian Siriano stocks select garments up to a 22W and Moda Operandi is offering a bevy of size 16 dresses and is eyeing more size inclusivity. Yet, change is slow to take effect. Uncle Karl is still siding with sizeism and let’s face it, most European luxury garments fit on the smaller side. Before big tears roll down your face and leave water marks on the vachetta of your Louis, I have some stealthy ways to keep up with the fashion set. Ready, set, blow your tax refund! Read the full post here

Coordinates and matching sets can be an amazing option for the office, and one that is so unique and polished. Depending on what industry you work in, there are so many choices in coordinates from more conservative suits to fun and colourful sets. Add these to your office wardrobe and the pieces together and separately can be truly timeless. If you work in a formal office setting like I do, I love to pair a great pair of fitted trousers with a matching silk tee for a look that is sophisticated yet effortless (navy on navy is a favourite of mine). Women in the fashion or industry or other more casual work settings have more leeway with this trend as traditional office dress code may not apply. Try pairing shorts and a blazer in a fun print, or striped trousers with a tee and a matching vest. There are so many great online shops selling office-appropriate coordinates recently at a super reasonable price. These are definitely worth checking out to add some awesome items to your professional wardrobe!

Product Details:

1. ASOS  Short and Jacket in Floral Jacquard, $75.86 and $108.37,

2. THE ROW Tita Cashmere and Silk Blend Culottes, $1,390 USD

3. ASOS  Sleeveless Blazer and Straight Leg Trouser in Stripe, $97.53 and $82.36

4. Michael Kors  Crepe Straight-Leg Pants, $1,395 USD

5. Helmut Lang Cotton and Silk-Blend Top, $265

This summer, all-white ensembles are taking over. With the increasing popularity of matching sets, overalls and jumpers, the options in mixing summer whites are virtually endless. One of my favourite ways to rock all white in the warmer months is an awesome pair of lightweight overalls paired with a cropped tank. This look is so easy- going and cool, and can be completed with a leather backpack and a great pair of slides. For an evening look, I love to pair my white silk shorts with a sheer white blouse and a bright heel for a pop of color. This look is completely effortless yet so sleek. While I love both of these, my absolute favorite white on white combination for summer is a matching two-piece set. Pair a midi skirt with a matching top for a look that is so put together for any summer occasion. All of these looks are so versatile, proving that all- white is becoming the epitome of easy summer dressing!

1. Aritzia Wilfred Lorient Skirt and Tournus Bra Top, $115.00 and $70.00

2. Reformartion Bahama Short, $138.00 USD

3. ASOS Noisy May Dungarees, $137.52

4. Tibi Agathe Bow Jumpsuit, $695.00 USD

5. 31PhillipLim Lace Tank, $350.00 USD

6. ClubMonaco Mika Fringe Tank, $189.50

A sleeveless button-up is always an effortless choice.

A high-neckline will keep you looking sophisticated and not too revealed.

You can never go wrong with a well-fitting vest to add layers and dimension to your look. When dressing for work, it’s best to steer clear of completely strapless items. By adding a vest over-top, you have an outfit perfect for the weather and the office.

Fashion Jobs – Cardigans

Friday, April 17th, 2015

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs

Basic Cardigan

Cardigan sweaters don’t always get the pretty reputation that they should.  Often seen as reserved, they made the perfect staple in the wardrobe of Charlotte York from Sex and the City.  While she may have been prim and proper and a high-bred of New York City, basic cardigan sweaters do not always have to be as refined as her and as refined as her life.

The Charlotte Way Products

There is nothing basic about the basic cardigan, so for a modern and youthful flair, wear your cardigan:

• with boyfriend jeans for the feminine and masculine combo

• wrapped around your neck wearing a slinky silk top and culottes, for that little bit of refinery but mostly for that emergency layer for summer nights out

• draped over your shoulders in a summer’s dress

• fitted with a pencil skirt for a sleek silhouette or with a flared skirt to even out the proportions.

• tucked it into high waisted pants
