We recently talked about some of the top fashion schools in Canada that fashion enthusiasts should consider when pursuing a post-secondary education in the field.
Now we want to take a closer look at these schools and their individual programs to help future students like you make the best-informed decision.
School: George Brown College
Program: Fashion Management, F102
Right out of the gate, the Fashion Management Program at George Brown College is the only academic program in Canada that is endorsed by the American Apparel and Footwear Association, (AAFA), which is pretty significant for a college level program as it gives you direct access to up-to-date industry standards and research materials that are typically only for its exclusive members.
The biggest takeaway from this program is its flexibility in shaping students’ career paths, whatever they may be. This is great if you’re unsure of what you want to do for a living, as it can bring areas of the fashion industry into your focus that you were unsure about before committing to them entirely.
This program also offers a ton of industry experience that are essential in not only the fashion industry itself, but also the arms the fashion industry reaches into, like retailers and general business. During the first year, students are given the opportunity to get valued field experience in select areas such as Fashion Buying, Production, Retailing, Wholesale or a related Marketing Area.
Another great learning experience this program offers is through its mock retail store course! The students are divvied up into the various retail positions like Store Manager, Visual Merchandiser, Buying, and Sales. This provides hands on learning and essential skills building.
In addition to the amazing core courses the program offers, there are also select core electives that cater to those who wish to round out their experience and understanding. Some elective courses included are Fashion Journalism, Portfolio Development, Fashion Project and Event Planning, Design and Colour and even Costume Production for Film and Theatre.
Above all, the Fashion Management program at George Brown College is a program that takes its fashion knowledge, support and advocacy quite seriously. The faculty and staff consistently make efforts in ensuring the courses in this program are set out to meet the Canadian fashion industry’s standards and core needs, and shape shifts itself as the market continues to change.
Should you choose to take this program, know that you will not be disappointed! You will meet a ton of like-minded people and get to experience a great city like Toronto.
If you’re looking for more information on the program or school itself, a great tip would be to reach out to the faculty or program admin team to get answers to your questions that aren’t listed directly on the site.
