We can all admit, when it comes to moving up in the world, we could all use a little help. Especially when it comes to the competitive world of fashion. Rewind to when we were kids, there was always that one person who we looked up to. Whether it was a teacher, parent or coach. They always seemed to have the voice of reasoning, that helped guide us to the right decision. When it comes down to flourishing your career there are many people who have been there done that. Here are a few ways you can find your career guru!
Volunteer Your Time
There are many places in the industry that could use an extra hand in the office. So why not offer yours, and gain that extra experience to get yourself ahead? Take a risk and send a simple e-mail to that company you’ve had your eye on, ask if they have volunteer opportunities or internship contracts. Of course, most opportunities won’t be paid but all money aside, this opportunity can bring a lot of good fortune by meeting the right people.
Mix And Mingle
If you’re coming straight out of school as a fresh graduate or revamping yourself back into your career, networking events are an easy way for you to get your foot in the door, as many gurus from all different places love attending events. It’s a great way to progress your skills regardless of how many years you’ve got in the biz. With a schmoozing conversation, you might come across an opportunity from someone who needs someone just like you. LinkedIn is a great tool to use to see what type of events could be happening near you.
Find A Veteran
Whether it be a college professor or an internship boss, don’t be afraid to remain connected. These veterans can teach you the ins and outs of the industry and always lend an open ear when you’re trying to seek advice. While you’re interning or in school be curious, creating conversation is the best way to educate yourself about the industry. Be a listener and hear out their experiences of when they first began and how they got to where they are now. Yes, it may feel like the good old days, when mom and dad lectured you to boredom. In the end, we can all admit, they were always right!
With all the different loops the fashion industry has to offer from retail to head office jobs. It’s a pool of opportunity, so jump in. Mix and mingle, intern and retain your relationships with the well-connected folks you meet along the way. Undoubtedly you’ll get yourself recruited.
