Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canadahat inspo

The most favoured season has finally arrived and we can hardly wait for all the stunning fall fashion looks we’re going to try. With cooler temperatures comes better hair days and more opportunities for our sense of fashion to shine, and we have rounded up a few must-try hat trends to add street cred to all your fall looks. These aren’t hats to wear when you have a bad hair day and need something to cover up- on the contrary, hats are a major staple for this season, and must be worn as you would a coveted accessory. Keeping warm while still looking on trend will be effortless for you after you get some inspiration for your next shopping trip.

bucket hat

Bucket Hat
The bucket hat has resurrected from the ’90s and we love this comeback. It was unexpected at first, but we love the way it has been styled from preppy to grunge. You are the ultimate cool-girl rocking this vintage look with a crisp button-down dress and boots that will surely inspire others to try this trend as well.

newsboy cap

Newsboy Cap
We have seen the newsboy cap make its introduction this year on the runways and it’s the style you need to own. Seen on many bloggers and fashion influencers, the newsboy cap has been reinvented from its newsboy era into high fashion.

floppy hat
Floppy Hat
Who doesn’t feel like Jennifer Lopez when they throw on their floppy hat and a pair of knee-high boots? A floppy hat is an automatic confidence booster and looks amazing in all sizes. It’s a relaxed look and such a saviour when you want to go incognito with large frames for a weekend stroll.

unnamed

Fedora
The fedora is a great hat to start with when exploring and experimenting with hats. It suits most face shapes and hairstyles and it really works with every outfit style. It is a versatile piece and will be your go-to fall staple when in doubt.

beret

Beret
Un béret s’il vous plaît ! Every woman has owned a beret at one point in her life and it is a style that has been around for years. It is the ultimate French fashion staple and it brings an elegance and grace to every outfit pairing. Even though it is a classic piece, choosing a different color can definitely bring the edge to an outfit.

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Summer Sun Hats

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

When the weather starts to get steamy, it’s important to have some type of coverage as a shield from the hot sun. In a previous post, I discussed the importance of a great pair of sunglasses to pull together an outfit, and the same could definitely be said about a great hat. Recently, I’ve learned to rely on hats not only on less than desirable hair days, but also as a stylish sun cover.
Fortunately for all hat aficionados out there, hats have made a huge comeback in recent years. Variations of the fedora and the bowler hat and even the cowboy hat have made their way back into style, making it easy to find a great style to suit your summer outfit. Below are some of my favourite hats for the summer, which will easily compliment a variety of different styles.

1. Free People Clipperton Fedora, $59.75
2. H&M Straw Hat, $14.95
3. Nubby Floppy Panama Hat, $32.00, available at Urban Outfitters
4. Deena & Ozzy Tropic Heat 5 Panel Hat, $24.00, available at Urban Outfitters
5. TOPSHOP Transitional Bowler Hat, $18.00
6. Miss Selfridges Tan Felt Floppy Hat, $28.00

Fashion Jobs – West Coast Style

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Us west coasters have a laid back persona and it reflects in our style. Given the mild, yet tempestuous climate of the Pacific Northwest – the sun is out one minute, and it’s raining the next – layering is key. We generally combine function and form for durability (you never know where you’ll end up outdoors!), so looks tend to be versatile and casual – a kind of undone glamour that’s less structured than our eastern counterparts. Think a mild twist on the California girl: Lauren Conrad, Kate Bosworth, Rumi Neely, or Diane Kruger. Staple fabrics include breezy silks, distressed denim, and soft jersey knits for relaxed silhouettes; leather jackets toughen up floral frocks, and silk blouses dress up denim cutoffs. Outfits work overtime to take you from a bike ride on the seawall, to brunch with your grandmother, to dinner and drinks on a first date. See my essentials that capture the bohemian spirit of the west coast woman.

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Festival Survival Kit

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

With Coachella kicking off next week, it officially signals the beginning of festival season. Beyond the obvious fashion considerations, surviving a festival weekend can be a tough proposition without some basic accessories. My first festival, Lollapalooza in 2009, left me soaked and muddy on Day 1 without rain gear or proper footwear, and dealing with record heat while watching Santigold on Day 2. With that in mind, here’s my version of a festival survival kit that will help you stay comfortable – and stylish – all season long.

Footwear: The proper footwear is integral to your comfort at a festival. Sandals can provide relief for heat which is ideal for days that will be dry and hot. My preferred festival shoes though are basic Chucks – they are comfortable, relatively supportive and provide protection from rain/mud should the weather change drastically over the course of the festival.

Hat: The right hat is not only the perfect accessory for your chosen outfit, but a great way to keep cool in summer heat. A lot of festivals tend to sell hats onsite, but my favourite festival hat right now is the Clipperton Fedora from Free People.

Bag: Finding a great bag that can fit all your necessities – and look great too – is a key part of the festival planning puzzle. Bags that are too big will get in the way when you’re in the thick of the crowd, and small bags will leave you with little storage space. A great medium size bag that fits right in to the festival bohemian aesthetic is Spell’s handcrafted Dreamweaver bag.

Sunglasses: Sunglasses are obviously an important accessory for any outdoor activity in the summertime. I recommend buying a couple of cheap pairs in case you break a pair (or two, or three!). Forever 21 has a large and affordable selection of sunglasses in every style from Wayfarers to Aviators.

Water Bottle: A reusable water bottle is an absolute must to stay properly hydrated when the summer heat hits. Bottled water on the grounds is expensive and not so great for the environment, so bringing your own glass bottle is a great option.

Festival Dress: A comfortable, stylish dress is an important part of any festival ready-wardrobe. Maxi, midi or mini – all that matters is your comfort level in the item because chances are you’ll be standing for extended periods of time. American Gold’s Spring/Summer collection has several great festival dress options – my favourite being the daisy patterned Lola Swing dress.

1. Converse Jack Purcell Floral Sneaker, $70
2. Free People Clipperton Fedora, $59
3. Spell & The Gypsy Collective Dreamweaver Bag, $220
4. Forever 21 Round Sunglasses, $7
5. Love Bottle 1000ml Dandelion bottle, $18
6. American Gold Sweet Lola Swing Dress, $156

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Brimming With Style

Sunday, October 7th, 2012

Keep your accessories brimming with style this season by donning a wide brim hat to stay cool and cozy for fall. This season wide brim hats take on a variety of shapes and sizes to fit a range of styles and looks suitable for the cool-weather of fall, making this accessory a steady staple in any wardrobe. A bold chapeau is a nod to vintage 70s flair with felted finishes, streamlined trimmings, feathered accents and ribbon details. Rich, saturated jewel tones in luxe textural materials create a sleek city polish with wide brim hats. From oversized fedoras to floppy bills, wide brim hats add a festive edge to your seasonal ensemble. For a cool urbanite style, pair a wide brim hat with simple and basic duds like skinny jeans, a sleek button up or oversized sweater with flats or riding shoes for a look that’s effortless and ideal for the girl on the go. It’s hats off to autumn accessories!

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Wish You Were Here

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

It’s been a long time coming, but the weather is finally beginning to show some signs of warmth. Though these sporadic little bursts of sunshine are intermixed with plenty of grey skies and rain, it does feel like summer is finally on the horizon.

Many of you are undoubtedly making getaways to sunny destinations to kick-start this return to summer. Though vacation-dressing can be pretty simple in theory (summer dress + sandals + sunglasses and you’re usually done), there’s no reason why you can’t up the ante and add a fashionable edge to your look either! Whether that means playing with bold stripes or throwing in some chic accessories to tie the whole look together, we’ve got you covered with inspiration from the following two summer looks:

Hollywood actress, model, and Chanel muse Diane Kruger is photographed here in St. Tropez last year at a Karl Lagerfeld-hosted bocce tournament. Though she’s still comfortable and entirely warm-weather appropriate, Diane manages to look exceptionally chic by paying attention to the little details in her outfit. Tying your braid or ponytail with a simple ribbon (which can be found for next to nothing at any fabric store) gives your look a retro-inspired, coquettish vibe.

1. Zowie Skirt, Club Monaco $119

2. Wilfred Karol Tank, Aritzia $65
3. Jessica Simpson Sandals, Sterling $114.95
4. Straw Fedora, Gap $29.95

Joana of Rio de Janeiro (captured here by Garance Doré ) perfectly exemplifies ideal beach-side style. This time, it really is as easy as throwing together three pieces. The key is to have standout pieces and to throw them together without abandon. Bright colours or patterns do the trick nicely.

1. Scosha Necklace, Club Monaco $59
2. Kimchi Blue Straw Doctor Bag, Urban Outfitters $58
3. Cooperative Tank Dress, Urban Outfitters $49
4. Rothrock Sandals, Aldo $40

The festival kicks off this weekend.
