Going to work, like many other tasks and activities requires a certain wardrobe depending on what field you work in. Unfortunately, many of us don’t have the funds to drop a couple hundred on a skirt we will wear maybe once, and a couple hundred on uncomfortable shoes. Keep reading for some tips and tricks on how to build a work appropriate wardrobe on a limited budget!

Shop Smart

Of course, spending $10 on a blouse sounds better than spending $60, but in some scenarios, the more expensive option is your best bet. Stores like H&M and Forever 21 are great for experimental trendy pieces; staples should always be your splurge items. $10 may seem great at the time, but in a few months you’ll be strolling right back into stores because the item didn’t last.

The Basics

Every work wardrobe should be built from a foundation of key pieces that will get tons of use (I’m talking multiple times per week). This includes nice trousers, skirts, a dress, blouses, nice shoes, etc. The key when buying basics is to buy them in neutral colours and to keep them basic. A stand-out pair of red trousers look amazing but you’ll be less likely to get away with wearing them twice a week with no one noticing.

Off-Price Department Stores

Who doesn’t love getting a discount on amazing clothes? Places like Winners and Marshalls are key to saving money while finding great pieces for your work wardrobe.

Accessorize

This is when you can go to Forever 21 and H&M and buy trendy pieces that will jazz up any outfit. A statement necklace for $10? Perfect.
