May is just a around the corner, which means one of two things: summer is coming and you are ready to relax, or summer is coming and you are one of the thousands of others who are frantically trying to score a summer job or internship. Because April and May, like many other months (i.e. seasonal jobs starting in November, ending in January) is full of eager candidates applying for every job they can find, it is important to catch a recruiter’s attention from the beginning to make sure you aren’t getting lost in the pile of emails and applications. Here are our top three tips to help you get a recruiter’s attention and land that coveted dream gig of yours.

Subject Lines

When responding to a job posting online, make sure your application doesn’t get lost in the mix with the easy fix of using a creative subject line in your email. Keep key words like “resume” or “application” in the subject line, but spice it up a bit to add personality and make your email stand out.

A Standout Resume

Like mentioned in previous posts on Style Nine to Five, having an original, standout resume is important when applying for a job and catching a recruiter’s attention. When creating your resume, make sure to highlight your best features and experiences off the bat, so when a recruiter skims through they will be able to notice what you offer immediately.

Follow Up/Thank You Notes

Your time with a recruiter doesn’t end when you finish your interview, the days after are just as important. There are many cases where recruiter’s will interview dozens of candidates a day, and there is a large chance that you’ll start to fade away in their memory once they’ve talked to other candidates. One way to remind a recruiter of the conversation you’ve had and who you are is to send a follow up email the next day. This email can be short and sweet, or a bit longer depending on how long and detailed your interview was. A tip when sending a thank you email is to thank the recruiter for their time, and mention a unique point of conversation you had with the recruiter that both of you seemed to enjoy to spark a memory of your interview.
