Originally intended for the well-heeled who wintered abroad, they now act as a between-season pick me up to tide our sartorial appetites until spring. This was a season invented to deliver new product- so you can’t help but wonder, does resort really matter if you don’t own a yacht?
More and more, the answer is yes- resort does matter. Because increasing amounts of resort collections are acting as a forecast for what will be big in the spring, and as reported on style.com, resort collections “…spend the most time on the shelf in stores, influencing street style for the coming year.” So now that you know what all the street style darlings will be wearing, here are the four best resort trends that will carry over seamlessly into spring and summer:
Pleats
Pleats have gone from high school to high fashion! Balenciaga’s resort collection had pleats peeking out at the hem of skirts, while Chanel’s resort show had long, boxy skirts for evening featuring razor-sharp pleats. Meanwhile, Viktor and Rolf’s sping/summer show features sculpted pleats everywhere, and Dior’s s/s ’14 show featured sheer, neon skirts with subtle, almost-flat pleats. JW Anderson Pleated skirt, $650.
Wide pants
Skinny pants have become our go-to over the last few years, but it’s time to give them a break. For resort, Chloé, Narciso Rodriguez and Theysken’s Theory all featured fluid, wide-leg pants that are the stark opposite to those razor-sharp skinnies we’ve been pouring ourselves into since the mid-2000s. And for spring, Ralph Lauren and BCBG Max Azria continued the theme with billowing trousers. Missoni Wide-Leg Pants, $819, available at MyTheresa.
Blue
If there was one colour that reigned supreme at the resort shows it was blue- in every shade from cobalt to turquoise! Calvin Klein, Dior and Lanvin all played with different shades of the colour in their resort collections, and it was also a prominent colour in Marc Jacob’s and Prada’s s/s collections. Valentino dress, $2044, available at StyleBop.
Crochet
Everyone from Bottega Veneta to Alexander McQueen featured crochet in their resort collections, and the hippie fabric’s reinventions will blend in seamlessly with the nouveau-boho look that was a huge trend at s/s ’14 shows by Chanel, Valentino and Dries Van Noten. BottegaVeneta Dress, $2950.
