Chances are, if you’ve ever set foot in any sort of clothing boutique, you’ve probably come across Pink Martini clothing. The brand, established in 2006 by Amir Bahar, retails in over 800 boutiques internationally. Pink Martini is easily recognizable too, the quality is immediately apparent and the patterns are intricate and fashion forward. Unlike so many brands that espouse a “vintage feel” to their garments, Pink Martini actually evokes a certain modern yet classic feel with their collections. It’s trendy, timely, and always ready to wear. I spoke with Mr. Bahar on how he got his start in the fashion industry, and what sort of things inspire him to continue to create such fantastic pieces.

SNTF: What is the inspiration behind Pink Martini?
AB: Our inspiration is based off classic and contemporary art forms.  Our collection for this season is very on trend with different prints and unique styles.

SNTF: Describe the ideal Pink Martini customer.
AB: The ideal Pink Martini customer is open minded and keen on detail. She likes to stand out, and at times likes to be subtle. She’s a positive spirit with an independent style.

SNTF: How did you get your start in the fashion business?
AB: Well, my father was in the fabric business for many years. When I moved to Toronto I had to make a living; I started buying and selling clothing because it was something I was familiar with. My father used to bring home many fabric rolls, and I would check them for defects. I was helping my father at such a young age that I had already felt like fashion was something I was always a part of.  As I got older this business snowballed; and it was years of buying and selling. At one point in Turkey I questioned why I was buying other peoples goods, I felt like no one was on trend or unique so I created my own label.

SNTF: What’s the best part if your job? What’s part is most challenging?
AB: Best part of my job is to create. When we create our prints and see the final results is so rewarding. I’m like a little kid in a candy store. The most challenging is trying to balance everything. Sometimes it’s just a lot of overwhelming tasks. Managing everything while pacing yourself and being mindful of timing.

SNTF: What are some of the biggest trends for 2013/2014 that we should look out for?
AB: I want people to know we have eclectic prints with flowers and birds. You will continue to see unique prints. More shorts as well, we stick with our look. For the summer we’re going for the tropical look, it’s a trend we are tapping into.

SNTF: Where do you see the business in five years?
AB: I see it definitely in a few more countries. Our goal is trying to spread through Asia, the UK and Mexico.
