Montreal Fashion Jobs – Style Profile: April Wilder, Blogger

It seems like almost everybody these days is a fashion blogger. Your roommate discusses with fervour the intricacies of WordPress vs. Blogger and you think you recognize that girl from Psych 101 from Lookbook.nu. The key to being a successful blogger is a distinctive mix of personality, an excellent sense of style and compelling content to keep readers coming back for more. April Wilder has all of these qualities – and more. In a city dominated by trends, April stands apart with her unabashedly cool aesthetic; part 1970s throwback, part haute couture. I spoke with April about how she cultivated her unique sartorial perspective and her views on the fashion blogging landscape.

Zoe: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
April: I draw most of my style inspiration from men of the 60s/70s. Bowie, Jagger, Morrison, they all pushed boundaries with men’s style and I think that’s what inspires me the most in fashion. That everyone is trying to be unique and push boundaries unlike other aspects in life.

Z:Who is your go-to designer?
A: I’d say [Alexander] Wang. When I first really started getting into fashion he was one of the first young designers I liked and he has not let me down since.

Z: What trends should we avoid this season?
A: I don’t think I can say any. I’ve had a problem in the past saying I dislike a trend and then I see it worn by a person a certain way and I like it. You have to be fearless and understand that it might ultimately be a hit or a miss but that’s the fun in fashion, learning from mistakes.

Z: Any advice for readers on how to start their own blogs?
A: My advice would be take your time and plan exactly what you want from your blog. It’s hard to collect readers if you don’t even know what you want.

Z: What’s your favourite part of blogging?
A: Knowing that people from all over the world are somewhat connected to you.
