The best way to capitalize on the longevity of your wardrobe and accentuate your figure, especially in a good pair of jeans, is to know your body bravado, and of course, the flaws and faux pas that actually work against your shape – you never want to end up on someones mental ‘what not to wear’ list! Now that Fall is here, denim is an indispensable staple item of any wardrobe and should be worn with everything from the hottest loose knits, to leather jackets and those fabulously warm coats. The new blue jean for Fall 2012 is all about silhouette and detailing; here is a fit guide to follow for the season and have you loving your denim, no matter what your body type.
The Curvy
You want jeans that hug and celebrate your curves, not squish and contort them, so a style with straight lines strikes a pleasing balance with a more voluptuous figure. Look for a pair that is fitted in the hips with a straight leg-line that will slim and elongate your silhouette. Opt for a high waist to eliminate muffin top – they are not only practical but they are also in style this season – and to help smooth your body lines and hug curves, select a style that is made with a little stretch. Avoid rhinestones or other flashy details around the pockets or seams as it adds too much extra bulk.

The Slim and Petite
To avoid wearing denim will drown out your smaller frame, go for a bootcut flare or wide-leg jean that is fitted through the thigh and won’t overwhelm a petite size. Ensure the proportions of the pants are right for your body, and keep in mind that oversize buttons or pockets can look downright clownish on a petite figure. Stay away from cropped cuts or capris, which visually shorten the line of your leg, and when hemming jeans, ask the tailor to match the original as closely as possible—for instance, use the same color thread – to keep the look streamlined.

Jeans look great on this body type from the front, but there can often a little bit of bagginess in the hips, or even worse, a flattened look in the back. Get a little extra oomph by finding a pair of demin with built-in padding (just a little) to give you a natural-looking roundness, and be sure to skip flat back pockets. Slit pockets will draw attention to a natural curve and pockets with a flap add a little extra volume. Also opt for a colored jean or something with some distressed detail to add that extra wow-factor, and highlight the straighter lines of your shape with a fitted jegging style to hug your frame. When shopping for jeans with a lot of stretch, consider going down a size so they don’t become too baggy as they lose elasticity throughout the day.
