There is something about velvet that exudes pure decadence. Sure, there have been some questionable, over-the-top velvet fashion trends in the past, but the 2010 versions are much more wearable. A touch of velvet goes a long way, adding some contrast and class to your winter ensemble. The trick to keeping the look current? Experiment with colour and texture and please refrain from sporting velvet head-to-toe.

2. Look for velvet pieces with a unique pattern and a flattering silhouette, like this Nanette Lepore dress (Approx. $348). Available at Shopbop.
3. If you’re velvet-shy, try a burnout pattern for a subtle touch of sheen. Winter Kate Burnout Velvet Cardigan (Approx. $248), available at Nordstrom Online.
4. Velvet purses are the perfect go-to accessories for holiday events. Kimchi Blue Velvet Bow Clutch (Approx. $38), available at Urban Outfitters.
5. Add a pop of colour and texture to your look with some killer velvet platforms. Aldo Baisley Platform Pumps (Approx. $80), at Aldo Shoes.
