Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada

Main Image

Let’s face it – Canadian winters can be harsh. When it comes to winter dressing, it’s easy to fall into a pattern of chunky sweaters and jeans on a daily basis. While there’s nothing wrong with a comfy casual look, it can be nice to look for standout pieces that will add some personality to a cold-weather look. To combat the winter blues, here are 5 standout accessory pieces to create Insta-worthy winter outfits.

Wool Daisy Beret
Taking inspiration from the runways and street style alike, a fun beret can brighten up any winter outfit. This one from Urban Outfitters is embellished with daisies for added fun. With this chic beret, you’ll feel like spring is on is way in no time, even if it’s still -15°C outside.

Animal Print Ankle Boots
A classic animal print will never go out of style, so why not pick up a pair of booties that can be worn year-round? This versatile Zara pair would look equally great with a pair of dark jeans and a basic white tee as it would with a little black dress and an evening coat.

Down Scarf
If you’re a fan of the warmth of a puffer coat but not the bulk that comes along with it, this is the perfect scarf for you. Hot pink adds just the right pop of colour to brighten up any winter outfit while keeping you warm and toasty at even the coldest temperatures.

Fringed Flower Earrings
Statement earrings have been getting a lot of attention the past few seasons, and this trend is still going strong through 2018. More is definitely more with this pair of fringed earrings, so adding them to a simple black outfit is all that’s needed to amp up any winter look.

Rope Jungle Backpack
A practical choice for anyone who carries a lot in their purse of choice, this backpack from Acne will be your new go-to accessory. A winter white makes a bold statement, along with the rope details and chunky zippered hardware.

Winter is the time of year for cozy sweaters, comfy pieces, and lots of layers. Here in Canada, warmth is usually the top priority for cold-weather dressing, and style is often sacrificed during our long winters. To add a bit of flair back into your winter wardrobe, velvet is a great option to look chic but still feel like you’ve got on your comfiest clothes. Read on for seven of our favourite velvet pieces at every price point.

Wide-leg Velvet Pants
This pair of dark green velvet pants from H&M come in at only $49.99 and are a great wallet-friendly choice if you’re looking to add something velvet to your wardrobe. The wide legs will definitely make a statement this season, but keep you feeling comfortable.

Masen Booties
Available at Aldo, the Masen bootie would be a welcome addition to any shoe lover’s closet. Its chunky heel and soft grey colour make these booties a versatile shoe that’s easily wearable throughout the winter.

Velvet Blazer
Pieces from Madewell always strike just the right balance between tomboyish style and effortlessly cool, and this blazer is no exception. A classic piece in solid black, this velvet blazer can be worn for years to come.

Shop the Look: Madewell Velvet Blazer, $160, available at Net-a-Porter

Toeda Dress
Feminine and pretty, this pleated spaghetti strap dress from Wilfred would make any occasion an affair to remember. Wear it now over a knit turtleneck, and into the spring and summer on its own.

Fashion Jobs – How to Pick “The Dress” for Holiday Parties

Tuesday, December 12th, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in CanadaHoliday Dresses

Now that December is here, it’s time to get hustling in finding those outfits for the number of holiday parties that you’ve been invited to if you haven’t so already. You may be time constrained, but it is always helpful to have a set of “mini” criteria when searching for that perfect holiday dress. This way, you are not flustered and anxious in the mall, with all those great promotions happening and crazy crowds you have to deal with. Of course, we all desire for a glitzy dress for the party but there are so much more to consider rather than completely adhering to the agreed holiday theme. We’ve laid out a set of standards that you can use a guideline to help you in your shopping journey with the consideration of budgeting!

Wrap Dress

Tip 1: Pick a dress that complements your body type
Petite girls should stick to short form-fitting dresses to accentuate their figure. If you’re choosing an asymmetrical dress, make sure to pair it with heels for a balanced look. Add a belt to not only accessorize but also to elongate your legs and bring out the waist. For taller girls, midi dresses are recommended.

Shop the look: Mock-Wrap Dress, $19.90, available at Forever 21

Red Dress

Tip 2: Pick a dress that provides adequate body coverage
Although many would say “do it for the fashion”, it also never hurts to be practical because of the cold weather. Instead of wanting to look risqué all the time, you may consider wearing dresses with a turtleneck detail or long sleeves.

Shop the look: Flowing Dress, $25.90, available at Zara

Velvet dress

Tip 3: Pick a dress with thicker fabric
In correlation to the above tip, pick dresses that have sensible fabrics including wool, cashmere, or velvet. There are many knit dresses that are versatile and can be worn as transitional day-to-night pieces.

Shop the look: Draped Dress, $69.99, available at H&M

Feather Dress

Tip 4: Pick a dress that lets you stand out
Holiday-themed parties are all about the sparkles and Christmas colours but there are so many other styles out there that can still induce conversations and ultimately, allow you to stand out! Consider wearing a dress with exaggerated sleeves, feathers, textures or unique prints!

Shop the look: Black feather Cersy Dress, $349, Club Monaco, green Bonsui Karen Tie Dress, $199, Middle Sister Boutique in Vancouver

Fashion Jobs – Styling Your Winter Boots

Thursday, November 30th, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in CanadaSTYLING WINTER BOOTS

Most people think winter boots and just dread them. Memories of tacky boots with snow pants as a child just can’t be erased, and no matter what you just can’t bring yourself to wearing them. The reality is unless you want to spend the day with soggy feet here in most parts of Canada, you can’t avoid owning at least one pair of winter weather boots. We’re not a big fan of trading style for practicality so we’ve got our guide to help you wear your boots in style!

Over The Knee
Not every winter day calls for heavy-duty footwear, but stylish footwear can also help keep you warm and we love our over the knee boots for exactly that reason. They go great with everything from riding pants to dresses and can even dress up leggings. We love wearing them with our favourite wool coats for a cozy and chic look.

Heave Duty Weather
Bundling up for cold snowy days doesn’t mean you have to look ridiculous. These Pajar winter boots are waterproof and will still keep you warm even with their slim design. Nothing completes this look more than a big winter parka, mittens and an iconic trapper hat!

Winter Boots

Comfortable and Cozy
Not everyone is into the casual style of UGGs but once you put a pair on, we dare you to take them off. These Australian sheepskin boots are ridiculously warm, and comfortable. They’re perfect for colder, dry days with less snow and go great with pretty much everything from leggings to jeans. We love wearing our UGGs with a warm flannel and parka for running errands like grocery shopping or getting that Christmas shopping done!

Casual Snow Day
If last winter was any proof, Timberlands are not just your boyfriend’s winter boot anymore. The Classic Timberland made a huge comeback in style last year, and this year is no exception either. Paired with this season’s hottest outerwear piece – the puffer jacket, we love this look for hanging out on a Sunday or worst case shoveling our driveways.

Wintering In Style
When we don’t have to worry about tall snowbanks Chelsea boots are our go-to for winter! They’re a must-have in any fashionistas closet as they go great with everything from trousers to dress and if worn right even sweatpants! Paired with a sweet sheepskin moto and baker boy cap, you’ll make even the biggest beach bums envy your winter style!

Fashion Jobs – Cozy & Stylish Cardis For The Office

Monday, November 20th, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in CanadaCosy & Stylish Cardigans For The Office_Inspiration

The minute those leaves start falling and that air gets crisp, it’s cardigan season! A classic layering piece that never truly goes out of style, cardigans come in so many different cuts, lengths, and materials. Cardigans make the best type of layer sweater for the office as they’re easily taken off and don’t need to be pulled over the head, often causing static (a.k.a one of the biggest style faux-pas known to mankind) once those heaters go on. We plan on staying, cozy, cute and static free this year at the office with our favourite cardigans of the season!

The “Jackardigan”
Especially on a cold Monday morning, who wouldn’t want to wrap themselves pretty much head to toe in comfort? Yes, this cardigan is THAT long. It’s got a great belted back that adds some style and structure to this cozy piece, and pockets which are always key when you’re at work. We love this number from Oak + Fort in brown, but it’s also available in black and khaki.

Shop the Look: Oak + Fort Cardigan 1553, $128

Opening Ceremony definitively did Varsity right this season and this 50/50 blend wool sweater is no exception. It’s a classic cardigan style which really goes well with everything from slacks to skirts and even jeans or a dress. Again, this style also has pockets which are super handy when you’re running to meetings with pens, phones and whatever else you’re scrambling to balance. Just be careful not to get any coffee or pen marks on you!

Shop the Look: Opening Ceremony Off-White OC Varsity Cardigan, $395, available at

Trendy & Cozy
Leave it to Zara to take one of this season’s hottest prints – grey herringbone – and bring it to us in ultimate comfort. We love this cardigan for so many reasons but mainly for its belted waist and thick but structured and not bulky knit. We see this cardigan going great on its own with a basic Tee, leggings, and thigh-high boots, or over a blouse with dress pants for a blazer look.

Shop the Look: Zara Herringbone Cardigan with Belt, $99.90

Easy Does It
Everyone needs at least one chunky knit cardigan, in whatever style you choose. We thought this BDG one was perfect to leave at the office as your go-to cardigan when you forget one at home, or on those surprisingly chillier days. It’s simple enough that it’ll go with almost anything and available in a total of 5 colours, we’re sure you’ll be getting at least more than one.

Shop the Look: BDG Charlie Dolman Cardigan, $72, available at Urban Outfitters

A Canadian Classic
If you’re a cardigan aficionado, you probably either have this or need this in your closet. This Hudson’s Bay Company Wrap Cardigan has a pin closure front and is a wool/nylon/cashmere blend. We love this Canadian classic worn with either joggers at the cottage in late fall or at work with a great slack and loafer.

Shop the Look: Hudson’s Bay Company Wrap Cardigan, $128

Fashion Jobs – How to Pull Off a Slip Dress During Winter

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canadasd1

Like the pyjama top, the slip dress has also been a major hit in the boudoir-dressing trend. Apart from providing good comfort and a sensual vibe, this supposed undergarment has the potential to be very versatile – especially when it comes to layering. Like the jumpsuit, the slip dress does not necessarily have to be attributed to warm temperatures because of its open and form-fitting features. It can also be coordinated with many pieces that not only provide a chic appearance but also sufficient warmth to aid in the colder seasons.  The ultimate goal is to achieve a composed look by bringing out lux style from basic loungewear. Here are four “spicy” ways to rock the slip dress in the winter season that will make you forget about that nasty freezing temperature.

Coordinating with Basics
Similar to the jumpsuit, basic tops may be worn underneath the slip dress for a layered look. Wear a short or long sleeve tee for a casual look or a turtleneck for a dressier appearance.

Coordinating with Bottoms
Don’t worry about your legs being bare because it IS possible and acceptable to wear a pair of bottoms underneath a slip dress. Jeans provide a smart casual look while dress pants give off total sophistication.

Coordinating with Sweaters
You may also choose to layer over top of the slip dress rather than underneath. For more warmth, consider wearing an oversized and chunky funnel neck or crew sweater for a chic look.

Coordinating with Accessories and Shoes
For a classic vintage look, you may consider putting over a fur stole or scarf over the slip dress. For shoes, knee-high boots are recommended for adequate leg coverage.

Fashion Jobs – Cold Weather Outfits

Thursday, February 2nd, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada

With the start of February, it feels as if the winter weather is getting colder by the day. And while we can’t actually do anything to improve the freezing temperatures, we can embrace the elements in a killer winter-approved outfit.  To make getting dressed that much easier this month, we’ve put together 3 cold weather outfits to stay warm and look cool.

2. wool dress pants 3.topshop top 4.Boots 5.Ralph Lauren Coat

For the Office

To rule the boardroom this winter, revamp your look by investing in a pair of ultra chic wide-leg, plaid pants. These can be worn with turtlenecks and blouses or with a graphic tee if you work in a more casual office. Complete the look with a pair of warm boots and a maxi coat.

6.For running errands

7.Jeans 8.Bomber Jacket 9. Steve Madden Booties 10. ysl bag 11.Aritzia hat

For Running Errands

Ditch your go to leggings and UGG boots for a model off duty look. We love this street style look of pairing a bomber jacket with a pair of raw hem jeans and a designer bag.

12. Forgirlsnight 13.CapeCoat 14. freepeople jeans

For Girl’s Night

A cape coat is a winter essential because it’s versatile and is the perfect outerwear for a night on the town. When dealing with heavy cape material, it’s important to avoid wearing bulky sweaters and pants. Opt for fitted tops and bottoms and complete the look with a strong heel.

Fashion Jobs – Winter Approved Office Looks

Monday, January 30th, 2017

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in CanadaInspirational Image

We understand the struggle of balancing your fashion-forward style in an office environment in the dead of a Canadian winter. It’s not always easy to look your best when you have to battle nature’s elements to and from work. You may even have asked yourself a few times this season: How does one make chunky, shapeless winter clothing look good? It’s not impossible!

We’ve put together three outfits to wear to work this winter that are the right combination of chic and warm while still remaining functional. Getting ready for work this season has just gotten a whole lot easier!

1.sweater 3.Leather pants2.Boots

Look One

In the past, winter boots that had it all (anti-slip treads on the soles, waterproof material and warm insulation) rarely translated to sleek or stylish. Footwear companies have really stepped up their game and you can now find a huge selection of practical yet cool winter gear. Pair black wedge boots with leather leggings and a fuzzy sweater for a chic pulled together winter ensemble that will surely be a hit in the boardroom.

Product Details:

CHIKIMIKI Ines Black Cashmere Sweater, $745, available at Lyst

Sorel Jan of Arctic Wedge Mid Boot in Black Quarry, $280, available at Sorel

Imitation Leather Trousers, $29.99, available at H&M

8.leopard jacket4.skirt 5. cashmere sweater 6.belt7.Fleece tights

Look Two

Skirts can actually be a year-round staple if you get a little creative. Look for heavy fabrics and longer lengths when deciding to wear one in the colder months. First, tuck a cashmere sweater into the waistline of your skirt and complete the look by cinching your waist with a thin belt. Complete the look with a pair of fleece black tights, as they’ll protect your legs from the cold weather.

Product Details:

• Asymmetrical Zip Pencil Skirt in Wool, $95, available at J Crew

• Les 100 Ciels Cashmere Sweater in Cream, $197.69, available at ASOS

• Skinny Faux Leather Belt in Black, $6.90, available at Forever 21

• Fleece Tights in Black, $14.99, available at H&M

• Evans Leopard Print Faux Fur Coat, $190.94, available at Nordstrom

9. turtleneck 10.dresspants

Look Three

Ditch the predictable black winter jacket this season and swap it for something that makes a serious statement. This year, bold, attention-getting coats are all the rage, as seen on fashionistas from around the world. Faux fur, patterned and bold coloured jackets are an easy way to make a statement at work while still following the dress code. Go for a more casual look underneath, like a chic turtleneck, a pair of dress pants and ankle boots, and then let your outerwear do all the talking.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Cheap and Chic Winter Essentials

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Roots Hat

Your wardrobe needn’t suffer when the weather outside is frightful, even if you overdid it with your Christmas shopping this year. To brave the elements you need a coat or jacket that is flattering and equipped to handle the occasional snowstorm, like this down parka from Joe Fresh ($79). Cinch this oversized sweater from H&M ($24.95) with a belt and add a layer underneath for extra insulation. A pair of dark brown, shearling-trimmed boots from Aldo ($150) can handle slippery sidewalks. Don’t forget to keep those ears warm with this Signet Fairisle Trapper from Roots ($46).
