Navigating office attire can be tricky these days. Since the pandemic, many of us have rethought our wardrobes, shifting towards more casual styles. Unless your company has a strict dress code, you’ve likely observed a significant change in what people are choosing to wear to the office.
On one hand, dressing more casually is great for comfort, but it can also be unsettling if you feel underdressed. Business casual strikes a balance, but it often leaves a lot of room for interpretation. With many people working hybrid schedules, dressing up for the office can feel like a special occasion, but knowing what to wear can be a bit daunting.
If you find yourself staring at your closet in the morning, stressing about what to wear, here are a few tips on how you can create the perfect business casual look that’s a fit for your style and your workplace.
Review Your Basics
We all have our go-to pants, jackets, and shirts. Take a moment to review your wardrobe and identify the pieces you wear most often. What makes them work well for the office? As we head into a new season, this is the perfect time to revisit your wardrobe.
If you frequently reach for a black blazer, consider adding a navy or chocolate brown one for a fresh seasonal update. If you’re a fan of the classic white button-up shirt, try finding one with a unique detail like a wider sleeve or collar to give your look a bit more flair.
One of my favourite pieces I wore this summer was a blue striped cotton button-up. Since this fabric and colour are more suited for summer, I’m looking for a fall alternative with a similar cut. I’m considering a brown and white striped shirt that feels more autumnal and will be ideal for layering under sweaters.
Evaluate Hemlines and Waistbands
When I know I’ll be sitting at a desk all day, I focus on three main factors with my clothing:
1. Comfort of the Waistband: Will it become restrictive after an hour of sitting?
2. Length of the Hemline: Is it too short and likely to ride up when I sit down?
3. Fabric: Is it wrinkle-resistant, breathable, and appropriate for the season?
You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort; it’s important to find a balance that ensures practicality, so you feel confident throughout your day.
Add Fresh Tailoring
Tailored pieces can immediately elevate your outfit. Consider exploring various office-friendly jacket styles that offer a polished and refined look. To stay comfortable at your desk, pair your blazer with a long-sleeve t-shirt or a shell underneath. Vests are also a popular style for Fall and pair well with trousers, skirts, or under a blazer.
Step Up Your Shoe Game
Your shoes can significantly influence your overall look. While many offices allow sneakers and other casual shoes, it’s important that they remain clean and well-maintained. If you have a commute, consider bringing a pair of shoes to change into once you arrive. Switching from your white sneakers to a pair of loafers or kitten heels can instantly step up your appearance.
Showcase Your Personality With Accessories
Sometimes it’s helpful to have an office uniform—go-to looks that streamline your morning routine. You can infuse your personal style into these outfits through accessories. Adding a great belt, a classic watch, or a chic scarf can make a significant difference. It’s remarkable how accessories can improve your overall look and make you feel confident throughout the day.
Even in a relaxed dress code environment, a put-together and thoughtful outfit can help raise your professionalism. When you have a long to-do list ahead of you, what to wear can be the last thing on your mind. Prepare your work outfit the night before, so you can wake up ready and ensure a smooth start to your day.
