Meeting up and coming designers gives any writer a natural high and that’s exactly how I felt when I sat down with Alberta native, Andy Jones. Inspired by the fashion forward woman, his very first collection debuted at |FAT| Arts and Fashion week this Spring and this is only the beginning! Jones has big plans for the coming months starting with his first sale to the general public. His line, Du Laree has been available only exclusively to clients and now the growth of the collection officially begins at the grand opening of fashion and art boutique, Launch Toronto on June 29th (166 Spadina Avenue). Having always been a supporter of local talent, I wanted YOU, our dear SNTF readers get to know this lovable fashion entrepreneur.

Style Nine to Five: What does design mean to you?

Andy: Designing is the same as inventing, and even reinventing traditional pieces of clothing into new wearable pieces. Fashion is where art and style meet through my designs and creating pieces that convey my passion.

SNTF: What do you find sets you apart from other people in your industry?

A: I am very innovative with my personal style and a bit more fashion forward than the average man. This has translated into my collections and individual pieces. Like me, my clothes need a person who is fashion forward and can adapt my pieces to their individual style.

SNTF: The hardest challenge you’ve faced so far…

A: Being away from family and making time for myself. I am always working on a new project or have event to go to that I forget to make time for myself. I also miss my family back home (in Alberta) but they know I am doing what I love so they are proud of me.

SNTF: Do you have a favourite garment that you enjoy designing over others?

A: I really like making dresses – I think a woman in any type of dress speaks volumes about who she is.

SNTF: What summer trend has really caught your eye for this season?

A: I think the all-white trend is very fresh but I always love colour for the summer. I really like to see how designer brands take a trend and do it in their own way through every season.

SNTF: What will Andy Jones be up to for Fall 2013?

A: I will be working on Fall 2014 and showing my Spring 2014 collection.
