Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada7d4832bbfe5d494b39b70625a6013a24 (1)

Let’s be real, the ’90s were probably one of the best decades we’ve ever gone through. Not only for culture but for fashion as well. Who doesn’t want to have a dance party whenever they hear the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys or N’SYNC?  Fans still love their music so much these groups have even planned mini-comebacks. Who didn’t love Tamagotchi, Pokemon and the fun things you would get in your cereal boxes? While some things should really stay in the ’90s, like the infamous matching denim outfits worn by Britney and Justin, some things were made to last forever, including certain fashion trends.

Choker

Chokers
In the ’90s, chokers were seen on every young woman. The iconic plastic, braided, dark coloured choker was an outfit staple. Now, they are found in velvet, leather or gold, the options are endless. These pieces are no longer seen as ‘teen’ jewellery, but as a real way to accessorize.

 overalls-460x690

Overalls
Think Mary-Kate and Ashley after the Full House years, styled with cute graphic-tees and colourful crop tops. While they may have been bulky and childish back then, overalls have gotten a total makeover. Overalls are now a made with a sleeker line and a sexier feel. No longer will you feel like a painter, you’ll feel like you’re ready to take on the world.

Denim Skirt

Denim Skirts
One trend we’re thrilled to see making a comeback is denim skirts. making a huge comeback. You can find them distressed, a-line with buttons, or just plain denim. Not only can denim skirts be worn as a fun and flirty outfit to hang out with your friends, but it can also be transitioned for work. Throw on an oversized blazer, a dark denim skirt, a fitted blouse with tights and heels, and you are all set.

2-piece (1)

Two-Piece Matching Sets
As if! Matching sets are as iconic as Cher’s yellow plaid set in Clueless. These sets have now been taken into the 21st century. Not only can you get a coordinating set in tops and skirts, but you can also find flowy trousers and a crop top. The two-piece sets of now make you feel sexier and confident rather than ‘matchy’. They are also super fun to mix and match.

Fanny Packs
Fanny Packs are the most convenient fashion piece you can have. Biking along the Seawall in Vancouver? You don’t want to have to worry about lugging your purse around. Throw your ID, credit cards, cash, or whatever your necessities may be, and carry them around hands-free.

High-Waisted Jeans
They were first introduced in the ‘70s, reborn in the ‘90s, and now they have been completely redesigned today. With more options than just flairs or ill-fitting grunge denim, you can now find the high-waisted ‘mom-jean’, super skinny jeggings, and distressed. Jeans can sometimes be boring, why not have some fun with high-waisted jeans.

Strappy Heels
Circa Sex and the City, strappy heels were everywhere. Who didn’t follow SJP’s character Carrie’s, fashion choices? Everyone wanted those Manolo Blahniks she registered for when she married herself. Strappy heels are a great way to make shoes match every season of outfits. Perfect with a little mini dress or skinny jeans, these heels can be dressed up or down.

Nothing feels warmer or lazier than having a thick blanket wrapped around your body during the coldest time of the year, which is probably why puffer or quilted clothes were invented to achieve just that. Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada

MUJI announces Richmond store opening for April
As the Japanese retailer continues to see success throughout Canada, MUJI announces a third store opening in the Metro-Vancouver area. The new location in CF Richmond Centre is set to open in April of this year following Scarborough Town Centre opening next month in Toronto. The latest Richmond store will span across an 8,100 square foot space in the mall, right next to Victoria’s Secret. Given the prediction that MUJI will have between 15-20 Canadian stores by the year 2020, we can expect to be hearing more of these announcements very soon.

Saks Fifth Avenue Calgary Unveiled
The American luxury department store has opened a new location in Calgary, marking the brand’s third Canadian store thus far. Saks’ beautiful new 115,000 square foot space in Chinook Centre is two floors, a huge upgrade from the last occupant, Target. The third full-line Canadian Saks has some noticeable differences from the 2016 Toronto locations. The accessory boutiques around the perimeter of the store aren’t decorated specifically for the brands contained in them and are being set up as “soft shops” rather than the designer specific boutiques in Toronto. They also seem to be missing some of the key higher end brands from the women’s designer section that are present in Toronto such as Azzedine Alaia, Oscar de la Renta, and Dior. This may be to target a more contemporary market. However, even with these differences, Saks Calgary offers personalized services, a rustic Italian restaurant and exclusive brands all grandly presented in an opulent shopping atmosphere that is sure to impress.

South Asian Fashion Week to Debut in Vancouver
The Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam will be hosting a 3-day event for South Asian Fashion Week from March 2nd to 4th. This is the first time this event has been represented it Vancouver. There will be a gala and private viewing to start, followed by two days of runway shows, meeting the designers and browsing the SAFW showroom. The event will celebrate and showcase South Asian fashion designers and give a chance for people from every culture to experience upcoming trends first hand.

New Manolo Blahnik Exhibition makes last stop in North America
Manolo Blahnik: The Art of Shoes will be taking place at Toronto’s esteemed Bata Shoe Museum from May 16th, 2018 to January 6th in 2019. This will be the final stop on this exhibition’s tour after being showcased in Milan, Russia, Prague, and Madrid. The Bata Museum will have a beautiful display of Blahnik’s shoes and art, representing his important and remarkable five-decade career.

Style Nine to Five - Fashion Jobs in Canada

When we first land our dream job, we always begin our new careers dressed to the nines. We wake up two hours early ensuring we are dressed to impress and make it known that effort has been put into our outfit choice. We are the new person in the office and it is crucial to not only work the hardest but look chic at all times.

After a few months roll on by and the excitement dies down, we begin to get comfortable and so does our wardrobe. We hit the snooze time multiple buttons, leaving ourselves enough time to be dressed and ready in 20 minutes or less – and trust us, there is no more Monday to Friday magic.

This is where we come in. We have rounded up some key essential pieces and created a guide for our girls who would prefer those extra minutes of sleep in the am or who just wish sweatpants were appropriate for the office. We will get you as close as possible.

lazy pants

Drawstring Pants
Once you find the perfect fit buy one in every colour ladies because these pants will be the easiest and most comfortable go-to work pants you have ever owned. It accentuates your waist and drapes against your legs while still giving a great shape. We swear by these and so will you.

lazy dress

Sweater Dress
Whether it’s winter or summer a classy sweater dress is the way to go as it’s a relaxed one-piece that you can throw on and dress up or down as much as you’d like. A crew neck or V-neck is preferred with a cap sleeve, making it the ultimate year-round work staple.

lazy shoes

Mules
If it’s not a meeting our heels are being tucked under our desk. There is no need to walk on pins all day and feel uncomfortable when you’re being the boss that you are. Mules are your work best friend that will support you all day and a shoe like this will elevate your work attire giving you a chic modern edge.

lazy sweater

Cozy Sweater
We can’t send you out for work wearing an oversized hoodie; it would be unjust for us. But we will send you out in a sweater that has a luxe look and that will go with any bottom. Choosing a sweater with a trim, embellishment, or texture will give you that extra work glam to deceive your co-workers into thinking you spent time on your wardrobe.

lazy dusterDuster Jacket
A blazer is a bit formal for every day and feels stuffy. We might work the nine to five life, but we don’t always want to dress it. Even if you’re wearing a t-shirt with your drawstring pants a duster jacket will elevate your outfit to make you after work ready to hit the town.
